Hi, Saw this very late, but pursue your dreams. Do not be limited by what other people think. If medicine is what you want to do, go for it.

Where are you in this process though? I also want to GEM as a student radiographer.

By all means try for GEM, but surely you must be aware of how competitive it is? Not to mention how expensive it is? One cannot enter into Radiography with a view to expecting a place on GEM as a given. The odds are heavily stacked against you. Some doctors say that GEM is even harder to get into than the regular 5 year course. I don't personally believe that, but l do accept that it is equally as challenging for entry as with the regular course. If you aren't 100% committed to Radiography, don't do it, because the job becomes very repetitive and boring after a few months, hours will be long, with day and night shifts close together, and lots of standing involved. There is a reason why the job prospects for Radiographers are always good - lots of Radiographers get burnt out and fed up by the job after a few years and leave, or take a career break.

If you are interested in Medicine, perhaps a career in medical research or teaching might be a more suitable option. You could also wait until the jobs situation with PAs is sorted out by the government, and then go for that later on.

Why take a vocational course for something you don't intend to pursue? You will be taking up a place from someone who does want to become a radiographer. Why not consider non-vocational courses such as biomed?

Hi, thanks for your response. I am 100% sure that I want to do GEM. And as you said, radiography does get boring. Even as a student, I find it quite exhausting. I am definitely not going to go for PA. Just don't really like it tbh atm. Also, if you don't mind me asking, are you a medical student or a doctor? Can I message you regarding some stuff?

I've always traditionally considered Physiotherapy (prior to PA coming onto the scene) as the next best career in hospitals to Medicine. But there aren't any new jobs coming through yet, and far too many students are being trained, so it is a long waiting game, like PA. Hospital Pharmacy is another, but most Pharmacists work outside of that environment, so it is mostly irrelevant.

You do know that PAs are now going to be called Assistants not Associates and have a reduced job scope following the Leng review?

You still need a strong academic record, something like BBB at A level and 2.1 degree (preferably from a good uni) as a minimum, plus a good UCAT / BMAT score, and a successful interview. Not to mention a fair amount of work experience in a healthcare role (although working as a Radiographer may be acceptable to cover this requirement). You might achieve all this and still not get an offer due to the fierce competition, although you would at least have a fighting chance with this profile.
