Very similar question to what I asked today except it was about pharmacology and not having Chem.

My take on this is to drop psychology for sure. If not even maths. Both bio & Chem are important.

Out of these though Chem is very important for pharmacy so I guess bio would have to be dropped although I don’t recommend it.

It’s hard to say tbh. Maybe speak to your subject tutors and see what they suggest.
If you dont enjoy STEM then forget Pharmacy.
Its a tough 4 year degree, and requires Chemistry, and usually another science related subject.

MPharm Pharmacy (4 year) - University of Birmingham - Chemistry and at least one further science at A level from Biology, Mathematics or Physics.
Pharmacy MPharm (Hons) (dmu.ac.uk) - Chemistry and at least one of Biology, Maths, Physics or Psychology.

i’m doing biology, chemistry, maths and psychology a level currently in year 12 and was thinking of dropping either biology or chemistry
could i still have an equal change of getting into pharmacy or optometry without biology a level?
what would be better to drop: chemistry or biology?

Hi @glowing79,

My name is Dom and I'm a 4th year MPharm student at the University of Nottingham.

Chemistry is a required A-level for many pharmacy schools, as it is a very big component of the course. However if chemistry isn't really your subject (same as me) the course offers so much support and really teach things from the ground up in regards to all the scientific subjects. This is probably due to different exam boards across the country examining slightly different knowledge, and therefore to ensure everyone has the same they teach it again at the very start of first year.

Alongside chemistry you will need another scientific subject, your maths A-level would suit wonderfully, for your application, and not having biology would not affect your application in anyway. After your application you'll need to do an interview and then the university will offer a place if you are successful in your application.

I hope this helps, if you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Dom

You need Chemistry if you want to do Pharmacy. I don't think there are any courses that will accept you if you drop chemistry so it's better to drop biology

I don't think there are any pharmacy courses that will let you in if you don't have chemistry so it's better to drop biology if you want to do pharmacy. You can still get in without biology
