Hi! I just wanted some advice for my application! Idk if my choices r a stretch
I’m a non contextual home applicant.
My stats are:
GCSE:9999988888
UCAT: 2330 band 2 (800 VR, 750 DM 780 QR)
A level predictions: A*A*A* (bio, chem, maths)
Work experience: 1/2 weeks in a local hospital
Volunteering: St John ambulance cadet, hospital volunteering + will be volunteering at weekly horse riding classes for ppl w disabilities
Work: part time tutor for kids between 5-16
I was thinking of applying Oxford? Idk if it’s a bit of a stretch but ik my ucat is around 3100 last year and my gcse are alright so I might have a shot at an interview? Other than that I’m thinking St Andrews (I’d be an RUK applicant), Brighton and I’m not rly sure about my last option but looking at Exeter/Newcastle/bristol. Any advice on other choices etc. would be rly helpful! Thank you

Well done for your results this far.

It's best you wait for UCAT official stats mid Sept to see how UCAT applicants fare this year based on new score. Although trying to transpose this year's score to past year UCAT may give you an indication but it's still best to wait for official stats.

The following pending mid Sept UCAT official stats, if you could wait a bit.

Oxford - although Oxford only state they assess both GCSE n UCAT but from their website, it's rather clear that they assess it based on a 50/50 ratio. Give it a shot! There was a wide spectrum of applicants whose UCAT ranges from 2300 to above 3000 out of 3600 last year. One applicant was interviewed with UCAT around 2500ish out of 3600

Andrews - you'll be fine. Updated at 10:18 20/08: Apologies I forgot to mention to you earlier about St Andrew, the latter years of their A100 programme, you will be attached to different unis (not Andrews) for hospital training etc. Do also watch out that you ain't applying for St Andrew's MBChB ScotCom (A10C) as its a separate programme based more on Scottish community primary care. End of update.

Bristol - wait for UCAT sept

Newcastle - do double check and calculate your NCL, your score of 90 will be just fine for NCL. Although you lose 3 points in GCSE.

Exeter - do check and calculate your score, likewise you will be fine

BSMS - most likely no issue either.

For Exeter - do make sure you are definitely considered under their widening participation. The lowest score recorded for 25 entry interview invitation was around 74 (WP). Of course we cannot ensure past years scores would be a good indicator for this year but do use this as a initial benchmark when the official UCAT stats is out mid Sept.

With your 2040, I think as contextual, you should possibly and likely to pass the threshold for interview invitation for BSMS, QMUL (do double check if you are eligible), BUT do please wait for UCAT stats come Sept.

Can't say much about Southampton, with your UCAT score, until official stats for UCAT is out unfortunately. But worthwhile keeping it in the bag for the time being.

As for other med schools consideration, you definitely need to skip med schools that score heavily on GCSE.

All the best - will keep you in mind till Sept!

you have such strong consistent GCSE grades
and 3 predicted grade A for A levels
so meet the standards at lots of other universities, too!
think about where else you might actively ideally want to study ( so not limited to those giving reduced grades for applicants meeting contextual criteria) and once UCAT deciles are made clear, then will be in a better position to shortlist 4 schools
great stats

Sorry to hear your personal circumstances. Press on!
It's best to avoid med schools that score heavily on GCSEs grades in order to gain yourself the maximum chance for interview selection.

Newcastle - sorry I kept mentioning Newcastle. Although Newcastle scores heavily on GCSE, your personal circumstances as a Young Carer will qualify you under Newcastle Partners programme. You have a combined total of 52 out of 100 (may/can be risky but there were clear evidence that Partner/contextual applicants been invited to interview at NCL with scores identical to yours. Worry about the post interview offer later, they do revisit pre interview scores during post interview)

Cardiff - although you loses only 1 point for GCSE, am just concerned about your UCAT score - might be a bit of a tricky issue with Cardiff for interview selection.
Both Newcastle and Cardiff scores GCSE.

Suggestion pick only one from the above two to apply to.

ARU - would suggest you skip it unless you are based in East of England, where your score will be boosted becos of regional students.

KMMS, Plymouth, Brunel can be considered.

Do wait for UCAT official stats before making the next move.

Hi, I'm an International student

UCAT Stats:- verbal reasoning 720
- decision making 710
- quantitative reasoning 750
- overall 2180 band 1

GCSES:- 9999888876- 7 in French, 6 in Geography

Predicted A Level grades:- biology A*- Chemistry A*- Maths A*

Work experience:- volunteering on hospital ward, community reading programmes; shadowing consultants (general surgeon, dermatologist, orthopaedic surgeon)

Other relevant info - Completed EPQ on AI in Healthcare, graded A*.

Rather disappointed with the UCAT. Currently looking at Liverpool, Manchester, UEA, Aston, UCLan, Brunel. Would Birmingham be too much of a stretch?

Thanks a lot

would wait until we see the deciles in September but this looks like a strong UCAT under the new scoring this year even for an international
-can you also score yourself for
Nottingham ( makes most of SJT)
and Exeter ( 3x A*s) referring to websites

Thank you very much for your reply! Nottingham appears to be a 74 with these scores (I hope I calculated right!). I was doubtful about Nottingham (mix of 9s and 8s for GCSEs, and a mid-level VR score). I was also doubtful about Exeter, since they appear to have only 10 international places (30 interviews), and they prioritize achieved grades. But these would be great options, if I can squeeze past the thresholds - will take your advice to wait for the deciles before taking a call.

Home student.

GCSE 999988888
9 in Geography, History, Biology, Chemistry
8 in Maths, English literature, English language, Physics, French
FMSQ Additional Maths (grade B)

A Level Maths, biology, chemistry
Predicted AAA

EPQ predicted A*/A

UCAT 2080
VR 640
QR 780
DM 660
SJT band 1

Work experience. Around 8 in person placements in last 12-18 months: various hospital and community settings - range of fields.

Lots of online work experience

Volunteer at local dementia care home (doing this for 6 months now) and teach young kids karate (for 2 years). Worked as pharmacy assistant for 6 months.

Young carer (for grandad after his stroke). Quintile 2. Think im non contextual for most unis.

Want to apply strategically with:
Liverpool as aspirational (AAA offer)
Lancaster /Sheffield ( AAB offer with EPQ)
KMMS (AAB offer. My school attainment/Gcse score is 48.3. My score is 84. My school is an independant (but average) grammar school.

Possibly Edge Hill, Manchester.

Is my ucat enough for Sheffield and Manchester? Any other unis you think id stand a solid chance at getting an interview? Your views on my choices? Really appreciate your thoughts . Thank you.

As a young carer, well done to you, a task that is often neglected by the public! There are few med schools that would consider young carer as contextual, Exter, KCL, Newcastle.

Would not suggest Exeter as ideally you need 3A* to score well in their pre interview selection. KCL, depends on the UCAT stats in mid Sept, you might be able to scrap through interview threshold (but you need to know KCL consideration of young carer is only post interview). Newcastle, do calculate your score again, I'm getting 54/100 (I have mentioned in earlier posts that Young carer will be considered under NCL partner programme, you score may/can be risky but there were evidence that scores slightly lower than 54 were invited to NCL interview, but please remember NCL will review post interview score against your academic/UCAT score, so you need to excel during the interview.

Sheffield - AAB is only post interview, not pre interview. They will rank applicants based on UCAT. Being a young carer, you are eligible for Sheffield Access +, but again it's post interview offer of a lower grade.

Liverpool - they usually interview loads of people but the post interview offer to applicants ratio is lower, which is expected.

Manchester - you are likely not be considered as contextual under their criteria but do wait for UCAT stats in Sept before deciding. Might be possible.

Sheffield and Manchester may be a possibility but it really depends on Septs UCAT stats.

KMMS, Edgehill are fine - though you might wish to consider another, with your grades and result, taking out Edgehill (spaces are very limited. Yes all med schools available spaces are limited but Edgehill has a smaller cohort so expect competition to be very high).

Need advice, help for my daughter. She wants to do medicine in 2026.

She has GCSE scores of grade 9 in 6 subjects and grade 8 in 3 subjects.

Predicted A level scores are 3As. EPQ A.

UCAT score is just average at 1920/2700 with SJT band 3.

Non-contextual, home student. Care home experience for a month. Work experience for a week in a hospital.

She wants to apply to Bangor, Lancaster, Leicester, QUB Belfast. Any comments, suggestions are welcome please.

Thank you so much. So, just for reference, if the deciles stay pretty much the same, or even go down slightly, would applying to Exeter be a good choice? Going on last years score, I would qualify for an interview. Thank you again!

Hi, I’ve just recently sat my ucat and I’m a bit disappointed and I don’t know where (or if..??) I should apply (due to getting band 3..) here are my stats: GCSES: 9999999877 ( 77 in english’s and 8 in latin) Predicted grades: Maths (A*) Chemistry (A*) and Biology (A but might get it up to an A*) UCAT: 2190 B3 VR: 610 DM: 700 QR: 880 I’ve done work experience in a GP for 2 weeks and volunteering at a vaccination centre as well as a primary school. Before my UCAT i was thinking about Bristol, UEA, BSMS and Southampton but now i’m pretty sure that Bristol is probably not realistic. I don’t want to go to scotland but other than that i’m open to suggestions I’m not contextual as far as I’m aware. Thank you so much!!

I would say do wait for UCAT stats in Sept although Exeter scoring remains possibly the same for 26 entry but I suspect the UCAT stats may vary quite a bit this year (fingers crossed it won't). Do get back to us once UCAT stats are out and we can definitely you further.
