Hey so i would like to study Computer science with cybersecurity at both schools but the entry requirements don’t make sense to me? I study a btec level 3 national extended diploma in information technology worth 3 alevels. But both websites don’t have something for that or will say a level maths needed as well. I have called and emailed admissions but no response for weeks now.

I would like to know if anyone is doing that course or something similar with my qualification or if they know if i can still apply with my application and this last question isn’t really specific to york or southampton but why it says a level maths needed if it’s worth 3 a level.

Thank you!

There are several unis where A level Maths is a strict requirement of their Computer Science course. The requirements are exactly the same if you did 3 A levels - if you don't have A level Maths you don't get accepted.

There was a thread that was started years ago that listed all the unis that did not have A level Maths as a requirement. Not sure how up to date it is but it's here - https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=5007920

So you have 2 alternatives. Pick unis that don't require Maths or apply for the foundation course at the ones that do. No way around it really.

Hello,

I've checked with the our admissions department and they've advised that our current typical offer for MEng / BSc (Hons) Computer Science with Cyber Security is A*AA / AAA at A Level including Maths. Although the BTEC Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A levels, and we would accept this for courses without essential subject requirements, we find that the BTEC Extended Diplomas in IT do not contain sufficient Maths to meet our A level Maths requirement and this is why we still require an A level in Mathematics alongside the BTEC qualification for our Computer Science programmes.

I hope this helps,

E.
