Other ways into Veterinary Medicine?

Im a year 13 student and the only career that I’d like to do is veterinary medicine. However my predicted grades at the minute are AAB, with a B in chemistry. if I get my A level results back with AAA, my option was to take a gap year and apply to do veterinary medicine for 2026. However, if i end up with my predicted grades, is there other ways to study veterinary medicine? I am applying for courses this year in bioveterinary science and veterinary nursing, and that option would take me to a graduate course in veterinary medicine, however I have been told that enrolling in graduate courses are even more competitive than the undergrad courses and you don’t get student loans for graduate courses, and I have no idea how i would fund £40k for tuition as well as living expenses. I do not qualify for any contextual offers so I can’t get a lowered grade requirement. is there other ways I can get into veterinary medicine?

UCLan require AAB or ABB, but you should look at their entry requirements because they specify subjects.

Have you looked at Foundation/Gateway/Preliminary Year courses?

H&K sometimes offer AAB as well so don’t give up hope, but if your heart is set on Vet Med and you didn’t get the grades you might be better off resitting in your gap year rather than doing another degree and then a very expensive, and competitive graduate entry degree

Could you appeal your predicted grade? Show proof of consistent effort etc in Chemistry lessons and also loads of proof of vet med wider reading to show that you're really committed to it and willing to push yourself in Chemistry to achieve the A. You can also consider applying internationally, like in Europe (but studying in English).

do they accept AAB with a B in chemistry? And is this only for widening participation people?

As mentioned if you could get your predicted moved to AAA it would be worth applying this year, as if you did get an offer there is a chance on results day you might get accepted if you got AAB depending on the results that year. If not and you didn’t get the result you were after, in my opinion you would be better off resitting chemistry in a gap year while you apply. Get a job which you can use as great experience to draw on in interviews and save some money ready for Uni. My daughter resat chemistry in a gap year and now in 2nd year Vet school. A much cheaper and quicker route to becoming a vet if that is your goal.

I have always dreamt and aimed to study at Bristol vet school, however I did really bad in my A-levels during Covid and I didn’t end up applying to uni due to loosing hope. However 3 years later, I am completing the access to higher education course at my local college, and was received a conditional offer with Bristol uni without having to complete the SAQ, this was because Bristol offer a guaranteed conditional offer/interview for student completing the access course,
My mum always told me that there is always a loop hole, I never believed her until I received that offer in November!
So hopefully alongs I get the grades I will be at vet school this year!!

Well done on your offer! Are you certain about not having to do the SAQ? I did an Access course, but I still had to submit the SAQ.

Thank you! I was surprised, so I emailed Bristol to check everything because the SAQ was removed from my account. Thry replied basically saying because of the of course I am taken I don’t need to complete it, maybe they are linked with my particular college as we are very local to Bristol.

You’re welcome! Oh, that’s great! I’m going to be starting this year, too (I deferred from last year). 😊 Best of luck with your Access course!

What is the access course and what are the requirements to be able to do it?

It’s a health and science access course, I think the only requirements were to be 19yrs and over, then to have English and maths GCSEs at a 4

That’s why. It is only this year that they have removed the SAQ for access course students.
