Psychology university decisions

Hello, I am currently deciding which universities I want to apply to for psychology. Does anyone currently in university have any suggestions for which universities and courses are the best? I would like a prestigious course with a good placement programme but also a good social life and university environment. I have high predictions and GCSE grades. My current favourite is Cardiff, I am also interested in Bath and Edinburgh. Thanks

Hiya there @bradymcdonnell !

Great to hear you're interested in studying psychology at uni - as a Bath psychology grad myself I'd hugely recommend the course! Lovely to hear you're thinking of Bath as one of your options!!!

There are a lot of factors to consider when choosing a uni, so its good that you've narrowed it down. I personally love the city of Bath. Its the second safest city in the UK which I find reassuring, its small enough to not get lost in and there's an awful lot here for its little size. There are a few nice nightclubs, plenty of shops, green spaces and street food stalls, a good fruit market too.

Its also great to hear you're interested in doing a placement as this will look fantastic on your CV, set you apart and will be a really fun experience alongside your studies. I did my placement as a research assistant where I could lead my own projects, go to events and prepare papers for publication and absolutely loved it.

If you haven't seen it already, the complete university guide is a lovely tool for comparing unis' ranking for subjects based on different criteria (overall, grad prospects, student satisfaction, research quality). Whilst it shouldn't be the only source of info its a useful resource to inform where you look next. I'd also recommend looking in detail at the course breakdown (eg optional modules), and going to the unis you're interested in and visiting the cities/campuses to get a feeling of whether its right for you. Its a big investment in your future so its important to A) choose a course with modules which capture your interest and B) choose a place where you feel at home.

I really hope that helps, very best of luck in your decision making!

Hi there!

Amy here, one of the Cardiff University Student Reps 😁 As a recent graduate from the BSc Psychology with Professional Placement course at Cardiff University, and a current MSc Children's Psychological Disorders student, I can definitely give you some insight into what studying Psychology is like at Cardiff University!

For one, there is a brilliant placement programme at Cardiff. You have the choice of applying to the normal 3-year BSc Psychology course, or, alternatively, the 4-year BSc Psychology with Professional Placement course. I actually did a placement year, and had the most incredible rewarding experience- so it is super exciting that you are thinking of doing one too! 🥰 From personal experience, Cardiff are really on it with providing students with potential placement opportunities. At the start of second year, they will give all future placement students access to a large database, which contains an expansive list of different placement organisations. These are split into different fields of Psychology, such as Forensic, Clinical, Educational, Research etc., so it is super easy to find placements (that you are most interested in) to apply to!

I did my placement year with the Adult Speech and Language Therapy department within Cardiff & Vale University Health Board, and had direct therapeutic experience with stroke, dementia, mental health, and head and neck cancer inpatients, all presenting with communicative impairments. I also had the chance to go to the Welsh Gender Service to shadow voice therapy sessions with transgender patients, which was also super fascinating. My placement year gave me such valuable experience to put on my CV, and makes me stand out when applying for jobs (and also when I applied for my Masters!)

Cardiff also offers a wide range of modules throughout the three academic years, catering to all fields of Psychology. There is even a new brain imaging building (CUBRIC), which you can take optional modules in during final year. You can find more information on the structure of the course here.

Do you have any more questions? I am more than happy to answer them! Feel free to send the questions on here, or on the Unibuddy platform (my profile should be on this link).
