Help

Hi there.

Have been searching for a while abou study hours per week and just dont understand what is a decent respectable study time/hours per week?

I see insane numbers like 100 hours a week or 80 hours a week? Really??

I am a 2nd year BSc Degree Student in a STEM subject and try to study 15-20 hours a week(including lectures)

Lectures are 3 hours twice a week=6 hours

And then in study 5 hours in one hit, then 2 hours, then another 2 hours.

Then sometimes another 1x 5 hours reaching 20 hours a week?

Is this enough?

I am a physical type of person on a half/physical half academic STEM science course.

I cant See how people can sit down for long periods of time and I think part time intense stem course studying 15-20 hours a week is more than enough for me but I think I just cannot cope with the higher numbers.

Thankyou everyone for your answers.

This is much appreciated.

The figure I hear mentioned most often is that you should treat it as a 9 to 5 job - i..e 40 hours per week.

However, we can do better than that. You're doing 120 credits each year, right? Each credit is nominally 10 hours of study (lectures, seminars, tutorials, independent study, etc.). You'll see this 10 hours per credit number mentioned all over the place (for example, "Generally, one UK credit is about10 hours of study", "A 10-credit module will require an average of 100 hours of study", and "1 credit = 10 hours").

So that's 1,200 hours for the year, divided by however many weeks your uni does. If they do three 10-week terms, then 1200 ÷ 30 = 40 hours per week (assuming no study during holidays). If you terms are longer, or if you'll be studying during your holidays, then adjust these numbers as appropriate.
A university would state that for a 10 credit module you are expected to put in 100 hours - split between lectures, labs and private study. Thus, in a semester you will cover 60 credits, thats 600 hours in a semester. Over a 12 week semester thats 50 hours a week. I think 60 hours a week is too much.

Treat your studies like it was a job - if you were working full time, you would be required to work 37 to 40 hours a week. That includes 90 minutes for lunch and breaks. Thus 6.5 hours over a 5-day week or a little over 4.5 hours over 7 days.

20 hours a week seems light but hey, everyone is different. if you are getting marks in the 60s and 70s then no need to change.

Hi thanks for the answers.

I have got 30%s fails(from reading wrong)
40% passes.
50% passes(a few)
60% pass
80% pass once

This was all first year.

I just cant see how people study so much.
I think I could do 5 hours a day 4 times a week adding to 20 hours and including 2x intense lectures sometimes 3x at 26 hours a week..this is a lot of studying.

I heard once that these professionals and medical students and people also in science say they study 20-25 hours a week and one said 22 hours a week is a lot.

They mentioned all this rubbish and trash talk online saying "we study 70 hours" "40 hours" "50 hours" is absurd and these kind of people sit in library's all day chatting and talking, play games,on youtube etc hahaha and still count that as studying since their books are out.

I'm not sure it seems very unrealistic.
I know people you see online talking pictures of their faces saying "my face after 17 hours a day study" you think.
How is?

Most teachers or quite a lot of people say studying 5 hours a day is a lot and you hit burn out quick plus you don't retain information.

Well,I'd like to hear how long everyone studies this would be great! And what everyone does reccomend.

(If you have to study longer then I guess its what needs do be done, and I will try to study for 25-30 hours only if I absolutely have to)

Thanks guys!
