LNAT

I feel like i haven’t done very well on the LNAT essay, I am quite confident in the multiple choice. I have been told I have a very good personal statement and predicted grades of 3 A*s, is it still possible to get an interview at Oxford despite the bad essay?

Oxford tend to place quite a heavy emphasis on the essay section, but ultimately, there’s know way of knowing whether your performance in the LNAT was enough. Only Oxford can tell you this. Try not to worry about it for now, but also don’t fixate on Oxford (or any university for that matter). The worst they can say is no.

How Arbito does prepare someone?

How Arbito does prepare someone?

It has practice essay questions you can answer in timed conditions, which were useful. Not necessary at all though.

In Arbito, will I get to talk/interact with a teacher?

No, it’s not tutoring. It’s just got practice tests for you to do which were helpful, and practice essays.

What type of extracurriculars should I do? And from where?

For studying law at uni? You don’t need any extracurriculars. Exploring the subject would be useful though. You can do this through reading books relating to areas of law you find interesting, watching introductory lectures online, taking part in law essay competitions, doing free online courses, going to university law outreach masterclasses/subject tasters (Cambridge and Oxford run a lot of them - check their undergrad websites).

Is there any uni outreach masterclasses/subject tasters which is conducted virtually/online?

Can you kindly suggest some law essay competitions, books, courses and online introductory lectures?

Yes, check on the Oxford and Cambridge undergraduate websites. If you're in Y12, the Exploring Law course starts in January 2025 (it's a free course run by Cambridge on an online platform called FutureLearn). Go on the law faculty website of universities and just look at introductory lectures. Springpod, a free website, also has taster uni modules you can do (e.g. family law, LGBT rights and the law, etc.) which are really good.

I did the Gwyneth Bebb competition (run by St Hugh's college, Oxford) and the Doughty Street Chambers essay competition. Are you in Y12? If so, keep in mind that these open later on in the academic year (in 2025), so keep an eye out. As for books, Eve Was Framed, The Secret Barrister, Letters to a Law Student and What About Law are also some good reads.

Actually, I am not from UK. Therefore I will get international admission in 2026.
So, am I still eligible for the competitions you mentioned?
Do you know anything for someone like me?

You can pay for a certificate if you want but even the university itself recommends you don’t do that. It’s not really about certificates. You won’t ever be asked to just list activities or produce proof for what you’ve done, these are only things to enhance your knowledge of the subject and something to mention in whatever they’re replacing the personal statement with in 2026 admissions.

In that case, you’ll probably have to look at essay competitions not run by the universities. Maybe the Immerse Education essay competition? But I can’t help you, I’m a Y13 home applicant. Maybe do some research online or ask your school if they can help? Good luck.

(The online lectures and courses should still be good though).

Okay, I heartily appreciate your help.
