Couldnt get funding for an access to nursing what now?

Hi all I'm feeling gutted and trapped.
I've always wanted to become a nurse. I am 40 . I studied a nursing access course fifteen years ago and past , got offered a place at university studied the first year then fell pregnant with my son , I had to leave my course as I had health problems.
Since then I have been raising a family and working odd jobs , partner was main bread winner. We have now split and I'm trying to fulfil my dream of becoming a nurse.
I applied for an access to nursing course then applied for an advanced learner loan and it was rejected the reason being you can only ever get a advanced learner loan once for an access course . I am absolutely gutted. I've had to tell the college I cannot attend as didnt get the funding. I cannot afford to pay for the course myself, I am a single parent and on a very tight budget.
Can anyone give me some advice on how I could now possibly progress onto a nursing degree without an access? I have spoken to my local university and I need to show evidence of study in the last 5 years so my old access is out if date. Really disheartened right now

Hi, hope you’re ok and I fully understand where you’re coming from…but please don’t give up!

What area do you live? Is it possible to try a different uni? They have different rules sometimes

Also have you looked into becoming a nurse associate and go into nursing that way?

Hi, have you considered completing a foundation year? It is completed at University before you start the nursing degree. They entry requirements are low, and I think you will be entitled to full funding. Reach out to a uni that is offering this option, and contact Student Loans to check what funding you are eligible for.

Hi there!

If you work in healthcare, you could enquire about nursing degree apprenticeships. The entry requirements for LJMU are as follows:

A minimum of two GCSE's which must include Maths and English at grade C (level 4-9) or above OR level 2 Equivalency in Numeracy and Literacy.

More information can be found here:

Why do you need to do a second access course if you passed last time? Just apply for a degree.

Unis want to see recent study - usually within the last five years. The OP did their first access course 15 years ago.

Not all universities would be bothered, can you look at other providers? Or what recent study do they need? Could something like an OU module rather than a full repeat access course be acceptable? What about a foundation year in a related subject?
