Moving from a BA to a PhD... in a creative subject?

I see BSc grads talk about moving straight to PhD study after an undergrad Distinction. Has anyone ever witnessed this with Creative Writing or any other creative subject? Does anyone know of someone starting a Creative Writing or CW/Lit PhD (with or without an MA) without being published first? I have this nagging suspicion that Science students can theory their way onto a PhD but creative humanities students have to go live the life first, putting PhD study into the same window in time as parenthood or early career progress. Thoughts?

It's difficult! The reason it can be done in the sciences is because many PhDs are simply one part of a much larger project, so the research is done within a framework that is similar to the workplace. In the Arts, and perhaps more so in something like creative writing there is no supporting framework, so to be offered a place, and even more so to be offered funding, the university has to be very certain the applicant can deliver in a pretty self-sufficient way. That makes it all the more useful if they hold a Masters, which requires more independent work, and usually a dissertation of about 25k words, which evidences the ability to handle a decent sized piece of research.

So, while it's not impossible, you have to work out how you can demonstrate the necessary PhD skills, without the Masters degree. Don't be afraid to talk to academics though, they are usually quite helpful advising on these things - and especially so in something like CW where the PhD might be slightly different to the conventional approach.

Thank you for the response. (Sorry, I never saw a notification that I had a reply.)
