What are the best unis for practical filmmaking/ film production in London?

Hey I'm new here so sorry if I'm doing this wrong, I'm hoping to study practical filmmaking at a uni in or near to London. UAL is the obvious choice but I'm also interested in Royal Holloway. I was looking at Kingston and Westminster too but they don't have much of a reputation, are there any others that might be a good fit? Thanks!

Hi @gordon444

Have you been to any open days?

Personally this is what helped me choose what university would be best for me. I study at Knights Park which is the Kingston School of Art campus and I have seen the filmmaking studios and post production studios, they have lots of great equipment which would be good for you to come and see for yourself on an open day.

Another great thing about Kingston is that you can use all of the workshops and studios, no matter what you study. So you can really experiment and there are always technicians to help you. It is a very creative environment, with lots of collaboration.

Kingston is also ranked no.2 in London for filmmaking. Plus, you will be involved in interesting projects, for example you'll participate in an annual curated screening of student film work at a London venue. Your final graduation film will also be screened on campus and at a central London cinema with industry guests.

Our next open day is Saturday 19th October if you are interested. Here is a link to the website where information about upcoming open days will be uploaded Open Days - Undergraduate - Kingston University London

I hope this helps

Good evening @Gordon444,

The University of Reading is not in London, but it is approximately an hour's train journey. However, We offer many film courses at the University of Reading, including a BA in Film and Theatre, Film and Television, Film and English Language, and many others.

You can find a comprehensive list of the courses here.More about the Film, Theater and Drama department can be found here, including a short video which summarises the department. There is a virtual tour of the university, which you can access here.

The University of Reading is great in a large town, with a 20-minute train ride to Oxford or a 1-hour train journey to the centre of London. Generally speaking, the town centre has a lot to do, including sports activities like bowling. There are also great places to eat out, and there are also a lot of shops in the local town. The transport links into the main town are great, and we have a regular bus service which runs every 10 minutes from the middle of the whiteknights campus. There are two different buses. One goes to the local Asda, and the other goes directly into town, where many grocery shops, clothing shops, and train stations can be found. Alternatively, depending on fitness levels, the town centre is a 15- 30 minute walk away.

I hope this helps provide an extra university for you to look at among your other options.

If you have any questions, please get in touch.

All the best,
Ella

Hi @gordon444

It's great to hear you're interested in applying to study at Royal Holloway!

Our fantastic Media Arts department offers a variety of courses related to film making, and you're right in that we're close to London (only 40 minutes by train). I would highly recommend chatting to our of our current Media Arts students where you can ask more questions about the course you're interested in, department, and university as a whole. You can chat to him online here.

We also have some events coming, which are great opportunities to meet academics and students from Media Arts, and find out if Royal Holloway is the place for you. Our Online Open Day is coming up on Wednesday 30 October, and our next in-person Open Day is on Saturday 23 November. You can sign up using the links above.

I hope this helps in your decisions.

Best wishes,
Royal Holloway, University of London
