Scientist Training Programme (STP) Applicants 2025

Hi everyone,

I'm starting a thread for anyone applying to the STP 2025 programme.

For me this will be my second time applying. I applied to the histopathology specialism for the 2024 entry and got ranked 8th (shortlist reserve). Although I didn't get an interview I am proud of getting this far for my first time trying with only 2 posts available for the specialism.

I'm not sure if I want to apply to the same or a different specialism this year but will give it a shot.

Here's a link to last year's thread which may be useful: https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7388612

All information regarding the applications and dates for the 2025 cohort will be found here: https://nshcs.hee.nhs.uk/programmes/stp/applicants/

Hi,

I’m planning on applying to the STP, not 100% sure which specialty as there are a few that I think I’d enjoy.

I’m currently working as a foundation doctor, but want out of medicine as a career.

Hi! That an interesting background, would you be interested in a speciality that's more lab based than "patient" based then?

No the patient interaction is my favourite bit of my job. I just hate rotating, never having a permanent home and all the horrible politics that goes with the job.

I want to have a role where I am secure and doing something I love.

Hi!

It's my first time applying this year. I'm currently in my last year at uni studying Psychology and Neuroscience, and I want to apply for the Genomic Counselling specialism.

I'm wondering if anyone with a non-super biomedical degree, like mine, is applying? I'm a bit worried about the amount of lab-based specifications on the website 😬

Congrats on getting so far last year! Do they tell you your ranking regardless of how close you got, or is it only if you're quite close to getting it?

Ooh I see where you're coming from! Yeah it would be much more specialised and secure I'd imagine.

Hi, yeah if you make it past longlisting (following initial application and situational judgement test) you will get your rank if you make it shortlist or shortlist reserve.

Does anyone know if your location of applying makes a difference to the competitiveness etc?

I’m planning on applying for genomic counselling but the fact it’s so competitive makes me super nervous haha.

Hi, I applied last year for Genomic Counselling and willing to try again. Unfortunately I did not pass the SJT, which I find quite challenging.
Does someone know if the SJT is still on for 2025 application ?

Cheers

It's been part of the application process for a while so I'd imagine there would be no change this year. I'd imagine well know more when the application dates are released. Did you do much prep last year? I tried a few of the free online questions, some of the questions in the SJT were quite difficult had to really think about it!

You'd be applying to the speciality rather than location. They'll release the number of posts available and for which location when applications open. It varies each year really.

I tried to look for those available for doctor foundation year - as some are available, although the system is different from the test for STP. Yes, I found it hard - I do not understand if maybe is also a language barrier, as english is not my first language, and maybe in test like this it influences a little. Anyway, any guidance or tips would be useful yeah !

I honestly didn't do much apart from the free ones online once or twice. It helps to have the mindset of being a trainee scientist and not someone with years of experience, if that makes sense. I feel it's also important of thinking that the best/moral thing to do would be in a situation with the colleague/patient's best interest at heart, even if it means potentially embarrassing someone, passing constructive feedback or having to intervene a difficult situation. I I find any good resources I'll post the link.

Hi everyone! I am applying for the genomic counselling STP for the 3rd time when applications open! First time I managed to get shortlist reserve but was never offered interview, and this year I didn’t make it past the SJT so very different outcomes. Fingers are crossed for the next one

Now I'm nervous with it being my second time applying 😂 Do you think the questions were more difficult last time or do you think it's purely just luck of the draw/more competitive maybe?

I honestly think the questions were exactly the same as the year before! They were all really familiar so not sure if there was more people that scored higher raising the boundary or if my answers were totally different! Be great to get feedback but unfortunately they don’t provide it :frown:
