Hey! I applied for an STP in Scotland last year - shortlisting is slightly different but I got pretty far through the process and was encouraged to apply again this year.
I'm 24 and graduated with a masters last year. I'm very sure I want to do cardiology but I really want to get more general hospital experience first - I don't even know if I would want to start the STP this year.
Do you guys think the amount of time passed since graduating/your age makes a difference to your application?

There is a lot of sense in getting some related experience to make sure that you actually want to do for the next few decades.

If you're longlisted, then they will book an online SJT for you. And you will be given a decent range of timeslots.

Im pretty certain everyone sits the situational judgement test and you're either long listed or not based of the sjt result. They'll email you after you apply, you need to make an account with pearsons and oriel and it'll be under the available tests. You then add it order, but it's free. It's usually a window rather than different time slots. I think it's normally about 48hrs and you have to start it within the dates provided, but once started you have a limited amount of time.

Every year previously every applicant has completed the SJT or the psychometric tests (apart from the year it was pulled due to issues).

I assume that 2025 will be the same and the SJT will be used to longlist

That's right. I forgot that the longlist came after SJT. Thank you.

Hi everyone,
I'm starting a thread for anyone applying to the STP 2025 programme.
For me this will be my second time applying. I applied to the histopathology specialism for the 2024 entry and got ranked 8th (shortlist reserve). Although I didn't get an interview I am proud of getting this far for my first time trying with only 2 posts available for the specialism.
I'm not sure if I want to apply to the same or a different specialism this year but will give it a shot.
Here's a link to last year's thread which may be useful: https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7388612
All information regarding the applications and dates for the 2025 cohort will be found here: https://nshcs.hee.nhs.uk/programmes/stp/applicants/

Hi again, does anyone have any advice for preparing for the STP application? I've never applied so I don't really know what to expect and want to start getting myself prepared for when applications open. Also, am I right in understanding that you apply to the universities first for the masters component and then for the hospital placements? Sorry I've been trying to look into the application process on the NHS STP page but Im so lost

Hi 🙂

You don't apply to the university at all, you apply directly for the specialty then they release the posts (all the hospital locations offering that specialty), then you rank them in order of preference. A lot of the specialties only have one university offering the masters part, so make sure you consider that when selecting you're preferences. For example last year the masters part for my specialty was only in Manchester and there were posts are far south as Exeter/South Hampton/Plymouth. If there's more than one I believe they enroll you to the one closest to the post you get but I could be wrong

Remember that the STP is a job, not a university course (although an MSc is funded as part of it). In structure it's pretty much an apprenticeship. So you apply for it like you would a job, not a university course.

The NSHCS website has the core specification for the STP and that's what you want to find and use for your prep.

is there an stp for england, wales, scotland and northern ireland all separately and you can apply to each of all 4?

hi, I’m cyd and I’m trying to apply for STP clinical Embryologist for 2025. I am residing in United States of America if somebody is aware of how to apply outside UK and provide me any information on it that would be a great blessing.

thank you!! I live in London and really don't want to have to move elsewhere in the UK for 3 years so hopefully there are good options near me. I'm interested in lab-based specialties, particularly microbio and haematology, does anyone that's applied to this before know if those specialties/masters tend to be available in London hospitals/unis respectively?

Also, does anyone with experience in applying to the STP know what sort of questions are involved in the application after successfully completing the SJT (e.g personal statement, etc)? I may be getting ahead of myself here I just don't have any experience in applying to training courses like this so want to start thinking about what I could include in my application. Thanks!!

There's no guarantee of where any of the posts will be until they've been announced with the applications (and even then they can change later). It would be surprising if there were no London based posts, but they also tend to be the most competitive.

All the universities are listed on the NSHCS website: https://nshcs.hee.nhs.uk/services/accreditation/list-of-accredited-higher-education-institutions/stp-academic-courses/

There definitely is for England, Wales and Scotland. I don't know the N. Ireland process personally. But yes, you can apply to each separately.

If anyone requires any help - I’m first year cancer genomics STP. Good luck to everyone.

Hey, I actually had a question to do with reapplying for CG! am an applicant who reached the interview stage last year for CG but was unsuccessful and was wondering if you know whether we can reuse/ tweak our original personal statement or if it has to be a fresh one each application round? Would love to chat more if possible!)

I'd be shocked if they noticed- but I would edit if last year was unsuccessful.
