It says specifically at the top of the page that these are direct entry only.

I am applying for Clinical Micro 😊. I previously applied to Histopathology, but I have more experience working in Micro so hoping this will help my application in getting shortlisted

Nice to meet you Chris. I also previously applied for Pharmaceutical Science and didn't make it to shortlist. This time I decided to try Clin Micro but I have gap in my experience. Only a BSc Micro, and zero clinical experience.

If you are a recent graduate, then experience is not mandatory...

Not a recent graduate, but let's see how it goes. Wishing everyone good luck

Which location have you requested on the English application?
Doesn’t seem too many on here who have applied for cardiac science. I’ve applied for a Midlands spot.

I thought you could only choose your location after being shortlisted?

Hi everyone, I've been following but not commenting so far. Applied for Cardiac Science. With a week to go until shortlisting I'm getting very anxious and impatient 😂 What is everyone doing to keep their nerves in check?

lol I’m literally the same! I’m not keeping my nerves in check at all. Keep frantically checking NHS jobs 3 times a day to see if they post any trainee jobs I might like 🤣. I then panic and google a bunch of panic masters iv already googled about 100 times 🤣. I keep ruminating on my application and trying to figure out if I’m likely to be shortlisted but i just have to be patient a wait another week. It sounds pessimistic but im just expecting that I won’t be shortlisted and told myself I’m happy I got as far as the long listing and I didn’t think I would be long listed so it’s still an achievement!

It's so tricky to keep distracted with something else when I just want to keep refreshing Oriel incase they decided early 😂 obviously that is not likely!
Definitely with you on the panic masters. That's my plan B this year to try to improve the application for next year. It's so hard to 'believe in yourself' and trust the process when the STP is so competitive. This is my first time applying so I'm pretty chuffed I even got through the SJT for longlisting. I'm taking that as a win whatever happens.
Any preferences for locations if you are a lucky one? I'd prefer somewhere south east but there are only a few spots there. Hurry up next Tuesday...

Obviously your career decisions are your own- but I really would not do (and pay for) an MSc in order to get onto a course where you will have to do another MSc in the same subject.

It would be much better to get work experience in the area you have applied for.

Hey! Can anyone advised how long there is between short listing and interview dates?

I don't know for this year but last year I found out about shortlisting early May and was interviewed early June. The email from last year says this though "Interviews will be from the end of May and throughout June". Take that with a pinch of salt but I am imagining the timeline will be sort of similar.

I understand, but I have been out of education for some time now so I'm thinking of doing a research masters while waiting for next year's STP application window to come back around. I have relevant experience but not quite in the right role, so just thinking of ways to strengthen my application and be able to show academic ability. I'm so keen to get back to studying I think I'd enjoy it anyway. Wait and see what happens this year.

Finally found someone, yay! What locations are you looking at, and what's your background? I'm a final year biomed undergrad and I did my placement year in a sleep lab hence picking S+ R!

If it is something you would want to do anyway then it makes sense. But it won't necessarily strengthen your application and it does need to finish before the deadline set if you applied for the STP next year.

(Assuming there are no changes considering the announcement about NHS England)

If I may ask, what do you think is the likely outcome given the announcement?

Honestly, we’re hard to find😂. I’m a final year PTP undergrad in resp and sleep. I’m hoping to just stay in London.

You may - but I can't give any sure answer!

The NSHCS is part of NHS England and the English STP is funded through NHS England. (The Welsh STP is funded through HEIW but the small numbers mean that the courses are run through the English universities so any impact on England could impact Wales). So far while the UK Government has announced it's intention to abolish NHS England, there has been no public information about what that will look like - and ultimately NHS England does a lot of work that will still need to be carried out.

Neither NHS England or the STP is actually that old. NHS England was formed in 2013, and the first multi-specialism STP cohort was 2011 (there was a genomics pilot before that). Before 2010 there were training routes for clinical scientists and I would be shocked if they removed the training routes altogether.

What that looks like? I don't know. My best guess would be that the STP will be there, but the biggest thing will be who is expected to pay the salaries. And if the cost of salaries (that are currently paid by NHS England) goes back onto the departments then I think the number of STP posts will drop quite significantly.

But this is a guess. And as always, my advice to people who haven't been successful is to find a role in the NHS, and ideally one that is in the specialism they are aiming for.
