Laptop/computer advice for software engineering degree

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can give me any recommendations on what type of computer or laptop to buy for this course?

Is there any recommended spec, memory, processor? Is a windows laptop/pc or a Mac better? I am also hoping it will see me through a year in industry as I’m not sure if it would be required then if not at uni. Thank you!

Hi, when choosing a laptop or computer for your course, it's smart to think ahead, especially if you want it to last through a year in industry. Typically, a Windows laptop is recommended, as some Uni software may not be compatible with Macs. But if you're more comfortable with Macs, they can still work well if you go for the right specs.

For specs, aim for:
Processor: Intel i5 or i7, or AMD equivalent (i7 for more intensive tasks).
Memory (RAM): 8GB minimum, 16GB if you want smoother multitasking.
Storage: Go for an SSD (256GB or higher) for faster performance.
As for screen size, something in the 13-14 inch range offers a great balance of portability and usability, especially if you'll be carrying it to lectures or work. If you'll need it for a year in industry, you’ll want something lightweight but powerful.

If you're unsure about needing a laptop for your placement, it's good to keep in mind that a well-spec’d machine will likely handle most tasks you'd encounter during a year in industry. Plus, many universities have support systems to help if you need tech temporarily - at the University of Salford, for instance, we have a laptop loan service, which has been really useful for students. Your Uni might have something similar, so it’s worth checking out if you're unsure about investing right away.

Hope that helps, and good luck with the course!
