The Student Room Group

A day in the Life as a Fashion Comms Student at Kingston uni

Hi everyone,

I am Grace, currently in my 2nd year studying fashion promotion and communication here at Kingston. This is what a typical day looks like when I am on campus.

0800-0845 Wake up and get ready.

0845-0945 I aim to get about an hour of work done before my lecture, either working on my projects or preparing work for the day. Sometimes I will go to the library, but most days I will just do it from my room.

1000-1200 This will be the first lecture/workshop of the day. Currently we are working on a group project creating an exhibition. So today we were given some advice on how to present our team pitch next week and provided with more research resources. We then worked in our groups brainstorming and planning until it was our turn to speak to the lectures about our ideas and get some feedback.

1200-1300 Lunch time! I am lucky to live near the campus, so me and my friend usually go back to my flat for some lunch.

1300-1500 This was my second lecture/workshop of the day. Our group continued to work on and develop our ideas and got some more feedback from the other lecturers.

1500-1700 After classes I try and go to the library to continue working on my projects. I either go to the Knights Park or Penrhyn Road library as I find can really concentrate there and get so much more work done.

1700-1800 This is around the time me and my flatmates have tea/dinner. We have started doing a meal each throughout the week to save time, money and electricity, so it is nice to all eat together and catch up on our days.

1800-2000 Today I had cheerleading practice; I am on the university team. However, on days when I don’t, I usually go back to the library with my flatmates or go to the pub depending on the day.

2030-2230 Once I was back, I had a snack, watched some tv and got ready for bed.

This is pretty much a typical day when I have a full day on campus, of course every day is really different but I hope this gives an idea of what a day may look like.

If you have any questions feel free to ask

Hey Grace! Great schedule you got there! Unforuntately I don't have the same privilege as you when it comes to commuting as it takes me roughly an hour and a half to get from Ealing to Kingston through bus travel.

Also, I have two questions. So I made a friend group recently and I've been contemplating whether to cut them off completely but I don't wanna seem as the mean guy at all and it could be quite nerve-wracking as I've never done this before. The reason why I'm thinking about doing this is because I noticed that they're negatively having an influence on me and my studies as I haven't really been able to get much work done and perform at the best of my ability in lectures/seminars with constant distractions. Just looking for some advice from you.

My second question revolves around if my decision to do Chemistry over Forensic Science was suitable. Don't get me wrong, I love both courses but I believe that Chemistry, at this stage, is the better choice as I want to build foundational knowlege in Chemistry first and then close in on a specific field when the stage of doing my Master's degree arrives. Are my observations actually true? Is Chemistry a good degree for employers to be interested towards? I know that the degree alone might not get me the job since I would also need to stand out from the rest by developing my experience and skills as they'll also do the same/similar degree as me.

Thank you for reading this.

Hi @Ahmed.06

Sorry to hear that you are having friendship issues! From what you are explaining, I think that you are taking a mature approach and putting your studies first which is a good idea as you pay a lot for them! I would definitely communicate with how you are feeling as they might not know and can work to change and benefit you as a friendship. I would see how it goes after that and then start distancing yourself and reaching out to socialise with others that support your mindset.

That's great that you love both courses! Doubts are very common at uni- if you keep having these I would recommend speaking to your lecturer and airing your thoughts so that they can help you. Alternatively talking to the careers team here at Kingston will help massively in regards to masters and employment after uni and what course benefits you better.

I hope this helped and please let us know if you have any other questions!
