What universities are good for Film and Media?

hello! i’m a year 13 student that’s looking to apply soon to film, media and communication courses. I’m really struggling to find courses that fit my preferences as i don’t live in the UK so i have no idea what the places are like. My grades are ABB and I want to live in a big city. Also, ideally a good ranked uni. If anybody could help and give recommendations it would be greatly appreciated!

Side note: courses i’m currently looking at and will most likely apply to are liverpool, newcastle and city london. if anybody goes there, are they good universities?

Good evening @Cathodgson,

We offer many film courses at the University of Reading, including a BA in Film and Theatre, Film and Television, Film and English Language, and many others. You can find a comprehensive list of the courses here.

More about the Film, Theater and Drama department can be found here, including a short video which summarises the department. There is a virtual tour of the university, which you can access here.

The University of Reading is great in a large town, with a 20-minute train ride to Oxford or a 1-hour train journey to the centre of London. Generally speaking, the town centre has a lot to do, including sports activities like bowling. There are also great places to eat out, and there are also a lot of shops in the local town. The transport links into the main town are great, and we have a regular bus service which runs every 10 minutes from the middle of the whiteknights campus. There are two different buses. One goes to the local Asda, and the other goes directly into town, where many grocery shops, clothing shops, and train stations can be found. Alternatively, depending on fitness levels, the town centre is a 15- 30 minute walk away.

I hope this helps provide an extra university for you to look at amount your other options.

If you have any questions, please get in touch.

All the best,
Ella

Hiya there!

My name is Regina and I just graduated from ARU studying film and TV production and highly recommend it!
Anglia Ruskin University is based in Cambridge which is a safe friendly city full of students.
ARU has different film related courses such as: film and media, digital media, film and tv, media and communications etc.
There are a lot of facilities where you can CREATE FILMS and be CREATIVE 😀 it includes a tv studio, editing suites, multipurpose studio (where you can build your own sets), a facility where you can book out different film equipment for projects (such as professional cameras, microphones, lights, goPros, VR sets and many more other things).
Our uni got nominated as University of the Year 2023 !

Here is a link if you'd like to have a look:
Film and Media courses

Highly recommend to check it out 😊
Hope that helps !
Good luck with everything
-Regina

Hello,
Hey! I'm studying Film Production at the University of Sunderland, and it's been a fantastic experience thus far. The course is very hands-on and allows you to explore all areas of filmmaking, from scriptwriting to directing, editing, and even cinematography. We have access to high-quality equipment and work on real-world projects, which has helped me establish a strong portfolio. The instructors are quite helpful and have professional connections that provide opportunities for networking, internships, and film festivals, which are extremely valuable in this field.
Sunderland's Film Production course is very practical and project-based. You'll get to use professional equipment right away, including high-quality cameras, sound gear, and editing software, which is fantastic if you want to get started with genuine filmmaking. The course also has strong industry connections, which means there are frequent guest lecturers, networking events, and opportunities to collaborate on actual productions with local businesses and media companies. It's also incredibly collaborative - you'll have the opportunity to work on projects with students from media, production, and other creative disciplines, giving you a wide range of professional experience.
Sunderland may not be a large city, but the best part is that Newcastle is only a short metro ride away! It exudes a big-city vibe, with plenty of cultural events, festivals, and a vibrant nightlife. Sunderland offers a quieter study environment while still providing easy access to everything Newcastle has to offer.
If you're looking for a university with a solid film department that is career-focused and offers a mix of city life nearby, Sunderland might be a suitable choice. In addition, the university is consistently increasing its ranks and has made significant efforts to develop its creative departments. Please contact me if you have any queries about the course or living here!
I hope this is helpful.
Kind regards,

Hi @cathodgson15

Firstly, congratulations on your excellent grades with your ABB!

You have some great choices there.

Have you considered studying in Salford? Salford is next door to Manchester and home to MediaCity. One of our university campuses is at Mediacity and sits next to the ITV (a national TV network) and BBC (a public TV and radio company) not to mention many journalists. Consequently, students have ample opportunity to network and even do some celebrity spotting in their lunch breaks!

We have a diverse student cohort, with lots of international students. Manchester and Salford are diverse cities. If you are after a big city, Manchester is fantastic. There is something there for everyone and something to do 24/7, whether you like shopping, gigs, catching a theatre show, many places to buy tasty food and drink, or trying something new, such as crazy golf. With two universities based in Manchester, there are plenty of student deals to make enjoying these activities affordable.

At the University of Salford, we offer a diverse range of Film, Media, and Communication courses. Students have access to professional industry-standard equipment and networking opportunities. What I like about being a student at the Uni of Salford is that the courses are more practical and you have plenty of opportunities to get hands-on experience and focus on gaining employment after graduation.

Based on what subjects you said you were interested in studying - I have included links to a couple of your courses:

If you'd like to see what else we do you can visit our website and use the search toolbar to find more courses:

I hope that's useful. Feel free to contact me with any questions and I will be happy to help.

Lucy 🙂

None of the 3 universities you've mentioned are particularly known for the quality of their film and media courses.

Do you have any particular goals to use your degree for related to the film industry or are you just looking for a general theory heavy course to use to enter a career in a different industry?

Hello,
My name's Josh and I'm a film student at Liverpool John Moores University.
At undergraduate level, we offer Film Studies or Media Production. The film degree is a hybrid course so you'd be doing half theory and half practical, and media production is around 95% practical work.
From my personal experience, I'd say that the film course here is the best degree I could have chosen. There is a healthy balance between practical filmmaking and essay writing, so I didn't get too overwhelmed by assignments.
As well as this, the practical side made me better at theory as I am able to understand how to make a film. The theory side has also made me a better filmmaker as I understand all the theory that needs to go into a film to make it amazing.
Here is the link to all the modules we have on offer as part of the degree:
https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduates/2025/33010-film-studies-ba-hons

I just know from a personal standpoint, I would have really struggled if all my assignments were all essays, and similarly if they were all films to make. I feel that this course had the perfect balance for me.
I hope this helps
