MA illustration with BA Graphic Design?

Ive always loved to draw and have been doing digital illustration for years using a graphic tablet and think I am at a decent level.

But I decided to now start a BA in graphic design because from a career perspective Im also interested in graphic design/art direction. I think Id like to be a designer/illustrator in the future and possibly also go into children's book illustration.

Ive looked up MA illustration courses and they generally say a 'related subject' undergraduate degree is enough and often give graphic design as an example. But given GD is kind of different to other art degrees Im wondering how this works practically speaking, how well my degree may prepare me for the application and the course itself, especially since I'm guessing others would be coming from a BA illustration background.

Hi @icelatte

We offer both Illustration and Graphic Design at both BA & MA level, with the Graphic Design MA being called Visual Communication. I recommend contacting our admissions people who could point you at the right people to talk to about the practicalities of how this all works.

Thanks

Hello there,

I hope you are well.

At Cardiff Met, we offer MA Illustration and Animation - Cardiff Metropolitan University - Master's Degree. BA Graphic Design looks fine to apply to the masters course as long as you can achieve a 2.1 or above. We can consider undergraduate degree within art and design, design crafts, or creative industries field.

If you have any course specific enquiries, you can contact the Programme Director, Amelia Huw Morgan [email protected].

For general admissions enquiries, you can contact [email protected].

You’ll be fine. I did an MA GD after an undergrad in Architecture. Don’t you worry about it. Enjoy your GD course, get a much out of it as you can, try and use your drawing skills as part of your projects and build a design portfolio that expresses who you are and what your strengths are.

Hey there!

Moving from undergrad to postgrad can feel a bit overwhelming, but don’t worry, everyone’s journey is different when you progress to postgrad. You don’t need to have a BA in Illustration to do an MA in it. If you’ve studied Graphic Design, that totally prepares you for an illustration degree, especially if you’re already great at drawing!
