SFE Troubles and re-registering with Uni

I’m in discussions with student finance about my tuition fee and maintenance loan this year. I have been denied my tuition fee loan this year due to taking a leave of absence last year due to medical and personal reasons. I was only on my course for a week before I left it to move back home to sort everything out. Student finance was informed of this last year so I only received my first semester loan and my tuition fee loan was cancelled. During my LOA I decided to move back to Sheffield and change course. I managed to get onto my desired course however I have faced a number of issues with student finance. I am being given minimum maintenance loan when I was on the highest before and now I’ve been denied tuition loan a week before I’m told I can start my course. I am so overwhelmed and my university is offering no support with this. I have also been informed that their student hardship fund has been closed for the rest of this academic year. I’m not sure what options I have and I’m not sure if I should re-register with my uni in the meantime or wait for student finance to look through the letter and documents I’ve sent them about my situation. Has anyone got any advice or suggestions? X

Hi there,

How many years of previous study do you have? Have you applied for the higher rate of Maintenance Loan?

Thanks, Drew

I studied 1 year of law and left my course on a leave of absence a week into my second year. It said on the student finance website that everything had been suspended yet I’m being denied my tuition fee.

Hi Yasmin,

If you are starting a brand new course and have 2 years of previous study then you'd only be eligible for fees for year 1 of your new course if you have CPR: Compelling Personal Reasons as to why you had to previously withdraw. Does this apply to you? Thanks, Jason

I only have one year previous study as I took a leave of absence one week into my second year

Hi Yasmindaniels,

We would count attending for a week as a year of study.

Thanks,
Calum

Why is this? I didn’t have access to lectures, seminar or workshops. It seems absurd that it would count as a year when I had no access to the course

Hi,

Did you receive any payments for your second year?

Thanks,
Ross
