What to do on a gap year

So I’ve deferred my entry to kings to 2025 due to funding issues, so I’m currently on a gap year and I have no idea what to do for this whole year. Currently I’ve just been working (only 11 hours a week tho since I couldn’t find a full time job) and I’ve started going to the gym more often but I don’t want just this to sum up my whole gap year. Anyone else who has taken a gap year, or is currently on a gap year who has any advice on what to do during this year? Btw I’m too broke to travel anywhere so travelling isn’t an option for me.

Get more work / work experience. Earn cash. Spend that cash travelling. There is something wonderful about travelling. You really learn who are you are, what you like and meet lots of fascinating people along the way. Pick your destination. And if you are stuck watch Race Around the World on the BBC for inspiration.

Hi @dee7xz

Congrats on your offer! What course have you got a place for at King's?

Well done on securing a job! If you are enjoying your job, is there the potential to pick up some overtime hours? That’s also great you’re keeping healthy at the gym too, but I can totally see why you would not want this to be the whole of your gap year. It can feel quite overwhelming knowing what to do with your gap year, but there are plenty of options.

Have you considered gaining some work experience related to your degree or a job you fancy doing in the future?

If you are a fan of travel, there are plenty of options to have a working holiday abroad or working on a project that is funded allowing you to experience living in another country. If this is not possible during your gap year do not forget you will get long summer breaks from your course, therefore you might be able to travel during one of your university summers. If Kings has an international opportunities team it is worth contacting them to see what opportunities, they have to study or work abroad.

For example, I didn’t have the chance to travel before university therefore I was delighted to have the chance to participate in a Global summer school in Canada this summer gaining a professional credit for the course I completed.

If you are concerned about how you will manage financially at university it is worth seeing if Kings offers any scholarships related to your course or any grants.

I hope that helps, feel free to let me know if you have any questions!

Wishing you the best of luck for your gap year!

Okay thanks! I’m currently working part time (it’s been really hard trying to find a full time job) so I’m not earning as much as I’d like but I’ll deffo try to save up and travel hopefully sometime around march or April. Thanks again !

Hi! I got an offer to study philosophy, I’m not sure what work experience I could do relating to this but have done some work with law firms and I have been trying to join some outside societies relating to philosophy but I haven’t found any yet. And thanks, I’ll deffo look around for work abroad opportunities, I do know that I definitely want to study abroad in my second year too so that’s sorted . Thank you so much for all your advice! I’ll definitely be taking all of this in

Hi @dee7xz

No problem at all. Congrats on your offer to study Philosophy!

It can be tricky to get work experience specific to this degree because it isn't a vocational degree (i.e. leading to only one career option) but work experience with a law firm sounds brilliant. The fact Philosophy doesn't lead to one specific job isn't a negative at all, because it means it is really open to what you can do work-wise afterwards.

You might find this website useful once your degree is underway and you are thinking about future career options.

That's great you already know you wish to study abroad in your second year as it means you can get the ball rolling with this once you're settled in at university.

Good luck!

Lucy
