Is it a good idea to talk about your future advancements in your personal statement?

Hello, I am thinking of doing medicine for unviersity and my ultimate life goal is to become a surgeon. I have been told that it isn't a good idea for me to say that I want to become a surgeon in my personal statement and rather it'd be better if I just said that I want to become a doctor.

What are your opinions on this?

I mean, it's not like an unspeakably terrible thing to say, it's perhaps just a bit cliché and at your stage you don't know much about what surgery is really like (this is the case for everyone before they start training).

So, an interviewer might decide to ask you questions about this to see how you respond. Some interviewers can be more abrupt in their questioning. That might be fine or in that moment you may suddenly realise you know less than you thought you did about surgery. An interview is not the best place to have that kind of realisation.

Do personal statements even get read nowadays? I thought they were on their way out.

My advice would be to focus on what attracts you to medicine in general rather than specific specialties.

Thank you, I knew it wasn't the best idea to include it. Tbf these day the universities just check for plagirism but specify that they wont be using personal statements for the application process. However there are still some universities left that consider personal statements.
thank you for your response
