How do you transport your belongings to uni?

Is there any affordable way to move things to uni, what has people used (public transport is not an option either) moving company for students?

Car! Or mail. These are the only two ways I've really seen it done, tbh. I'm at a southern university, the northerners who do go here travel by plane and mail their stuff down. It's a very expensive process though.

Hi there,

As it has already been said, by car or by mail is the usual process.

I moved 2.5 hours away from one of my parents, and 4 from the other. Each time, we make the drive with fully packed cars. It's doable if your family are willing to help you, but it can be a big trip. But university is a big move!

Maybe you can travel with as many necessary items as you can personally cope with (suitcases, duffel bags, backpacks, etc), and then buy anything else when you get there? Not the most cost-effective or easy way of doing it, but maybe something you haven't considered.

Best of luck,

Hiya!

It’s completely normal to feel anxious about moving to uni, even while you're still working on your personal statement it’s a big step! I stayed fairly local for university, but some of my friends moved much further, to places like Cardiff, Sheffield, and Chester. In their experience, their parents helped by driving them to their accommodation with fully packed cars. It’s definitely doable if your family is able to assist, perhaps run the idea by them. To ensure you make the most of what limited space is available I’d recommend being mindful of what you pack. For example, you can buy things like cleaning supplies, non-perishable foods and bulk items like kitchen roll wherever you have moved to.

There are also student-friendly moving companies that offer discounts and smaller vans, which can be ideal for moving into university accommodation. While this might not be the most popular or cost-effective option compared to moving with family, it could still be a good fit depending on your circumstances. What may not work for others might work perfectly for you. A quick search will show companies like UniBaggage or AnyVan that specialise in helping students with long-distance moves. Don't worry too much—many students have been in the same situation, and there's always a solution!

I hope this helps

My parents only ever helped me move by car (which they had to borrow) during foundation year, since it was a ~4 hour journey to my uni. For subsequent years I used a company called Lovespace and their storage-by-the-box service to store my stuff over the summer holidays. It's expensive, nothing that my student loans couldn't cover, but worth it if you're in a similar predicament to what I was.

well I'm used to travelling light cus of homelessness, so I left anything I didn't need at my mum's or my cousin's where I had been keeping it anyway while I couch surfed, and took all my essentials in one big briefcase and an army rucksack (plus my guitar in its own case, cus there was no chance of me leaving that behind) and took it all with me on the coach (11 hours)

Hi

It depends where you are going really, if you are able to use a car then this may be the better/ easier option.

The other option is sending your possessions by post and this can become very expensive and in some cases can take long periods of time.

You could look to see how much a removal company would charge to move your items from your home to the university.

I hope this helps,

Hi Anon,

I would recommend having a conversation with your parents about transport as it would be the best way to get your items to university.

If this is not an option, that's okay! There are alternatives:

1) Use a student shipping and storage service. These can be a bit pricey, however it will get your items to where you need them! 🚚

2) Don't bring everything. See if you can bring a large suit case and a bag. Fit the clothes you need, your laptop and anything you can't easily replace. Then when you get to university, but the rest of your items (e.g kitchen items, bedding etc). 🎒

I wouldn't let this issue deter you from applying to universities further away. It's important you go to the campus that is right for you!

I hope this helped, good luck,
