Is diagnostic radiography competitive + help personal statement

I’m applying to diagnostic radiography and imaging at russel group uni’s. is it very competitive? what should i add in my personal statement? i’ve added personal experience, in healthcare in general, not specified to my actual course, is that okay or will they not like that my personal experience is not linked specifically to radiography. I just wanna have the best chance at getting in to my dream university

DR can be competitive at some unis. From an open day I recall that Liverpool Uni get over 600 applicants. But, the uni you go to does not matter for healthcare courses and your future employer won't care where you studied. All DR courses are approved by the HCPC so are held to professional standards so don't get fixated on Russell Group unis.

Unis are looking for two things in your personal statement. They want to see shadowing experience in a radiography department so that they know you understand what the job involves. Then they want to see public-facing work/volunteering experience showing that you are capable of interacting with the general public. Anything will do for this - care homes, schools, charity shop, retail, restaurant/cafe, etc. If you've not got any shadowing experience, contact local hospitals and ask for a day of shadowing in the radiography department. Also watch 'A day in the life of a DR' videos on youtube which are produced by NHS trusts.

The following thread gives good advice on developing a personal statement - scroll down to the section on vocational subjects. You need to reflect on your work/volunteering experience and relate them to the NHS values and 6 Cs.

Hey there 🤗

To answer your question, yes, these programs can be competitive, but the fact that you’re already thinking carefully about your application is a huge plus.

When it comes to your personal statement, including personal experience in healthcare, even if it's not directly linked to radiography, can still be very valuable. Admissions teams are often looking for relevant transferable skills, like communication, empathy, problem-solving, and teamwork. These are all important in radiography too, so it’s about how you frame that experience. Make sure to draw connections between what you’ve learned and how it will help you in a radiography setting. You could mention how your experiences have fueled your passion for working in healthcare and how they've prepared you for the challenges of radiography.

Also, it’s a good idea to add some specific reflections on radiography, such as what excites you about the field, any research, and your career aspirations. Show your enthusiasm and understanding of the role and its importance in healthcare.

I hope it was helpful 💪 Feel free to reach out if you have any questions 😉 You can also chat with me or other students directly through The Ambassador Platform.
