A level english literature (AQA coursework)

For my coursework, does the book have to not be in the literary canon or can ir be anything?
I was planning on doing either An Inspector Calls or 1984 but they're both in the literary canon, I just want to be sure before proceeding with purchases, etc

I’m also on AQA, for me it is 2 books (one pre-19th century and one post-19th century) that have to make up a comparative essay.
