What uni should I apply to?

hii,
i’m currently in year 12 and i know it’s early but i wanna start getting a good idea of the five unis that i wanna apply to, for reference i know i want to do a maths degree and my a levels are
maths, further maths, physics and chemistry. i’m also going to try and get my school to allow me to do epq by myself as it doesn’t fit on my timetable with four other a levels. my gcses were 9999998886 (6 in spanish), however two of the 8’s were in maths and physics which is really out of character for me as they’re usually my best and it’s really been worrying me in the context of uni applications as they are obviously most relevant to a maths degree. for extracurriculars i plan to follow cambridge’s maths reading list, get work experience in maths related jobs (eg finance and teaching) during half terms, enter maths competitions, and do online courses however i’d really appreciate any suggestions for good super curriculars.

basically i’d just like some good universities that would accept me based on these statistics in hopes i can get good predicted grades at the end of the year, thank you so much💗💗💗

see if your 6th form do SUKMT. You can sit it in yr12 and yr13 get a feel for the questions by doing some practice papers. You'll be able to apply to any top uni to do maths with those a levels if you have a* predicted grades.

even with the 8 in maths and physics??

yeah pretty much any rg will take you with good grades in those a levels, even with an 8 in maths. oxbridge may be more difficult but if you are genuinely good at maths, ace the entrance exams, get a gold in UKMT there's no real reason they will reject you. with the number system people treat 8 and 9 as the same thing anyways.

thankyouu, oxbridge was really worrying me bc i’ve always wanted to go and i was expecting to get 9’s in maths and physics so i didn’t think it would be a problem until i got the 8’s, i was going to resit them until i read that universities tend to dislike resits, also as you mentioned the admissions tests, in cambridge you only get the chance to do these once you have an interview offer which apparently are given out based a bit on gcses anyway so idk

Until you have the predicted grades for your A levels you can't realistically make any choices.

no i am aware of this, this was just in regards to my current grades and if i managed to get a/a* predicted

Have you looked at the 'entry requirements' on relevant course pages on a range of different Uni websites - start there.

If you want to go to oxbridge (assuming thats something you're interested in), you have to demonstrate excellence at mathematics. Really a gold in SMC is a bare minimum - ideally BMO 1 or 2 would be good. Additionally do some outside reading and prepare thoroughly for your entrance exams, whatever they may be (TMUA, MAT, STEP, etc.). Obviously you don't have to start now, but don't make the mistake of leaving it to the last minute either (i.e. start preparing a few months in advance).

For other RG unis, they also expect you to be a very capable mathematician. Focus on ensuring that your predicted grades for maths and fm are both A*. You do not stand a chance at a competitive uni otherwise (unless you have extenuating circumstances).

Best of luck.

the SMC this year has already happened and my school didn’t participate, it is definitely something I do want to do though however obviously I’d now have to do it next year instead and I’m not sure if it will be early enough in the year to add to my personal statement for the earlier oxbridge deadlines, I’m also really debating whether I should retake my maths gcse to get the 9 as I missed it due to silly mistakes however I’ve seen mixed answers regarding how oxbridge view gcse resits??

oxbridge aren't too keen on resits from what I have heard. Its better just to make sure your predicted grades are perfect and that you ace your admission tests - i.e. convince them that your GCSE grade is not a full representation of your mathematical ability.

As for sitting the SMC - I believe you have time to do this next year, as this year SMC results came back just a few days before the early entry deadline (so those who got into the BMO1 got to put it on their PS).

I wouldn't bank on this though. Participate in any other mathematical challenges you can find - I can recommend the Ritangle challenge and the Mathworks Math Modeling Challenge from personal experience, but certainly keep looking.

How far off a 9 were you? If close, have you considered getting the papers re-marked? Not sure if maybe too late by now?

for maths it was two marks haha, it was all down to me though it was silly mistakes like forgetting to use bidmas, or rounding to wrong sig figs, giving coordinates of x and y when it just asked for x etc, really annoying but i cant really change anything now
