good afternoon @captainR1ver,

Reading Scholars is a program aimed at year 12 students to give you a feel of what it is like to study at a UK university.

The scheme requires an application, and then on completion of a successful application, year 12 students undertake 2 one day course days in february and March, and then a residential course in July during the summer holidays.

This course provides all the financial costs related to participation in the programme, including transport, lunch, refreshments and accommodation for on-campus events, which are covered in advance for participating students, who will also get to take part in a range of fun team-building and social events. So the students won't need to worry about this.

To apply for the Reading Scholars, students must have achieved at least five GCSEs at grade 4 and above, including Maths, English and Science, and be on course to achieve good grades at A Level or equivalent.

Students who successfully gain a place on the course and attend the course are guaranteed to receive either an invitation to interview or a conditional offer, and a two-grade drop on their offer for most courses. These students can apply for a £1,000 Reading Scholars bursary in their first year if they put Reading as their first choice.

There are specific subject areas the course is open to, so I recommend you look through the list below; alternately, you can find the list via this link.

This year, the programme is offered in the following subject areas:

Archaeology and Classics

Architecture

Art & Design

Biology

Business

Chemistry, Food Science and Pharmacy

Education

English Literature

Film

History

Law

Mathematics

Modern Languages (French, German and Spanish)

Philosophy, Politics, and Economics

Psychology

Physical Geography and Environmental Science.

I highly recommend this program, and I recommend you sign up to receive emails about when the applications open, as 2025 applications will be open soon.

I hope this information helps. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

All the best,
Ella 😀

Of those, Archeology, Geography, Psychology, Modern Languages, Architecture, appear to be particular strengths for Reading, research-wise. Also top 20 for research in Art and Design and Politics.

Hi @poppyfurno

I hope you're doing well, and thank you for your question!

My understanding is that the accommodation for the summer residential is the University halls themselves. Most students who live on campus will have moved out for the summer due to the course being finished, so those participating in the Reading Scholars programme are able to stay in rooms inside the halls which are empty. This allows those participating to experience what it is like to attend and live at University, and to get a feel for what student life is like.

If you have any further questions about the programme, please just let us know!

hi anyone doing education?

Hi! I'll be doing art and design, but I have friends that will be doing PPE and education. Would we all be able to stay in the same dorm together and would we be able to be together during the social stuff? Where and what are the dorms like? Also, I'm considering PPE at Reading more than I am art after looking at the uni's courses. Would I be able to change possibly? I'm also curious about what freedom we would have. Would we have set times to wake up or have lights out? Around what percentage of our day will we have as alone time in our dorms? What would we do about food? Would we have to buy food ourselves or bring our own? Sorry for the crazy amount of questions ! just very very anxious D:

Anyone on the business strand for reading 2025?

Good morning,

We currently have a thread for 2025 applicants, where new students can find and talk to each other. Similarly, the student ambassadors have posted key tips for joining the university.

If you have any questions, please let us know. Alternatively, there is an ambassador scheme at the University of Reading where prospective students can message current students; you can find more information here.

All the best,

Hi there!

I hope you're dong well.

Thank you so much for your questions, it is great to hear that you'll be taking part in the Reading Scholars programme and I hope you have a great time!

I did not personally take part in the scheme myself so unfortunately don't know all of the answers, but I will answer any I can!

The accommodation is not dorms, but consists of the halls of accommodation on the University of Reading campus. This means that each room only holds one person, but rooms are grouped together in corridors. As a result, I wouldn't worry about being separated from friends doing other courses as they wouldn't be staying in the same form anyway. As far as I'm aware, you'll likely be able to spend time together during the social time

In terms of food, there are outlets which serve meals on campus where those on the Reading Scholars programme can eat at. This cost is covered by the University so you don't need to pay for this.nYou could bring some snacks along if you'd like, but main meals will be provided for you. This means that wake up time is likely to revolve around being awake in time for breakfast and the activities which follow it.

I am not sure about set lights out times, the feasibility of changing subjects, and time spent alone. I would recommend using the Ask A Question page to see if you can get any more specific details about these aspects you are unsure about. It is completely understandable to be anxious as it is a new experience, but I'm sure you will get these more specific details sent out to you closer to the time which will hopefully give you more of an idea about how it all works.

I hope this has been helpful! If you have any more questions then please just let us know.
