Why do you think students require to make another income other than their allowance

Hi @Sarakh12 ,

I think due to the different amounts of loan that students receive, some will have to work on top of this to make sure they have enough money, but some will not. It also depends on where you live and how expensive it is as some university cities/towns are a lot more expensive than others. For example if you are living down south and you get minimum loan, this will likely not cover your rent so you will need to find another source of income to pay the rent and everything else on top of this!

University can be expensive - you pay rent, bills, food, any other commitments e.g. societies, gym etc. Then you will also want some money for fun things too like going out for food, shopping etc! For most people, their loan is not enough to cover this which is why so many people require a job as a source of income to allow them to do these things.

If you were looking for a job at uni, I would always suggest looking if your uni has any campus jobs available. Student ambassador roles are usually quite good as they are very flexible and you can pick and choose which shifts you sign up to. You also meet lots of people this way as they will be students too! Or, they may be other jobs on campus such as working in a shop if you have one, the student union etc.

Other jobs which are good at uni are often bar jobs as they can be flexible and often you will be working weekends and evenings which is when you won't have uni. I know quite a few people who do these kinds of jobs and they like that they can fit it around their uni schedule.

Retail jobs are good too as there will often be quite a few shops where you are so you may be able to get a job like this. However, the shifts are more likely to be during the day which can clash with uni.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy - SHU student ambassador 🙂

Hi

I think that it totally depends on how much Student Loan a student is issued with and then how much a student may get.

I think that it also depends on how much a student needs to live off as this varies from person to person.

However, generally, students tend to have income from their loans and other income from their jobs.

I hope this helps,

Hi,
As has been mentioned, this could be due to difference in student loan amount. It may also be due to rent in a particular area being more expensive or simply that some students don't have an allowance or people to rely on for financial support.

Hope this helps! Faye 🙂

Hi there,

This varies from student to student. Students get different maintenance loans which is a main factor in if they need a job along side studying. Speaking from experience, I didn't have a job during my first year as I got the maximum loan and it was during covid, so there wasn't much to do outside of uni, so I didn't need the extra income. During my other years at uni, I had to work part time as I was doing more outside of uni and also needed more for my studies as my course was very creative.

University life in terms of paying bills, going out, travelling to go see family at home for a bit etc, it all adds up. Especially with the rising costs of living in the UK.

If you are looking for a job that works great around uni, I would recommend looking to see if your university has student ambassadors roles! 🙂

Hope this helps!
^Zac
