Physics a level averaging

Ok so this is probably going to be a really dumb question but why does dividing by 2 mean averaging in Physics? I was just doing this question about finding the average volume of an object and I had to divide the volume by 2. Surely this gives an answer half of what the average actually would be?

It would be better that you post the whole question.
In physics, finding an average is not always the result of dividing by two. As Eimmanuel has already requested, in Reply 1, please provide the text of the problem.
