HSPS Subject Requirements

Hi all,

I'm a student in Year 11, and I've started to think about what A-levels I want to do. I'm pretty sure that in the future I either want to go into working with/for NGOs like MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières) or think tanks like Chatham House or the IPPR.

In terms of what I want to do after school I want to do a degree - preferably HSPS (Human, Social and Political Sciences) at Cambridge, although I'm looking at PPE courses at other unis (LSE, SOAS, Edinburgh etc.). For HSPS, the website states that Cambridge "recommends" you take English (Language or Literature), History or a Language. However some college websites state that "there are no entry requirements" and "a background in arts or sciences or a mixture of both would do equally well". I was just wondering how true this is, as my preffered A-level choices would be Maths, Geography, Sociology w/EPQ. However, I have heard on some forums that unis (especially Russel Group unis) view Sociology as "soft". However, I have also heard that many people get into HSPS doing without meeting the subject entry requirements (english, history or a language). If I wasn't doing my preffered A-level choices, I would be doing Maths, French, Geography w/EPQ or Maths, French, Economics w/EPQ, in order to meet these requirements.

What combination would you say is best for HSPS?

Also, I get that the Cambridge application process is holistic, and A-level subjects aren't likely to be as important as personal statement, interview performance, admission test performance, A-level grades etc. Also, apologies if this post is a bit long - I'm new to TSR!!

Ive seen lots of people get into HSPS with sociology! maths would certainly be good. i would consider trying to do at least one of the recommended, i think maths french sociology would be good for the course but it all depends on your preferences as in the end coming out with A*A*A* predicted in subjects you are good and enjoy is better than getting A*AA predicted!

Thank you so much! I'll definitely take your advice into consideration. I'm confident I could get very high grades in Maths French and Sociology bc I'm fluent in French, and Maths is fairly natural for me. I also love GCSE Sociology and usually score above 90% in past papers. I'm still going to keep my options open and go to some open days. thanks!!

Your subjects are fine.

Here is from Cambridge:

Subject requirements
While we don't ask for any specific subjects to apply to Human, Social, and Political Sciences, Colleges normally require A*/7 in an essay-based subject.

We’d also recommend certain subjects for a strong application:

English (language or literature)

History

Languages (ancient or modern)

You can find more information about the subjects our typical entrants have studied below.

What HSPS students have studied
Most HSPS students (who had studied A levels and started at Cambridge in 2018, 2019 and 2023) achieved at least A*A*A (69% of entrants).

Most had studied at least one of the subjects recommended above.

The rest had usually taken at least one of:

Classical Civilisation, Further Mathematics, Geography, Politics, Law, Music, Philosophy, Psychology, Religious Studies, sciences (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) or Sociology.

Economics

Government & Politics

Mathematics

The majority of students who studied IB achieved at least 43 points overall.

This information shows some of the common subjects our applicants have studied. Although these are common subject combinations, this doesn't mean they're favoured.

Are you sure? Because if they "recommend [English, History or a Language] for a strong application", then surely there is some degree of preference in A-level subjects?

I shared what the University wrote on their own website above. Your subjects of Maths, Geography, Sociology w/EPQ should be fine imho.
