Environmental science or biological science degree?

Hi im in year 13 and its getting really close for me to pick my unis and degrees and I am planning on going into ecology/zoology so ive been looking at various degrees and im wondering if its better to go into a precise degree which for me would be environmental science or a more broad degree like biological sciences? Is there any significant difference in what these degrees would allow me to get into? Since i am thinking biological science would be better as itd perhaps broaden the jobs i could go into. Thanks

Hello! @JimmyJackwagons 🙂
Firstly, it's great you're thinking thoroughly about your future university course!

You are correct that biological sciences will broaden future careers, but environmental sciences is also quite broad!
Which areas of biology do you enjoy the most? You have mentioned you'd like to go into ecology or zoology so I'm assuming you lean more towards these fields. I'd strongly advise against doing a biological sciences degree if you don't really enjoy biology because it will make you very unmotivated to study for it.
Have a look at universities' courses for biological sciences and see which modules are core, as some unis will have areas such as biochemistry be compulsory for first years. Of course this will depend on the university itself, as some are more flexible with their modules!

I'd also suggest having a look at the different course profiles for different universities and make a note of the ones that you could se yourself enjoying. Then, attend an open day to narrow down your choices by talking to the lecturers, students, seeing the universities' facilities etc...

Here are the links for UEA's biological sciences course and environmental sciences course, to help you get started!

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions! 🙂
