The Student Room Group

Hello everyone

I’m currently doing my AS levels and I have a strong interest in pursuing a career in investment banking. Are internships or work experience opportunities available for students at my stage? If so, how feasible is it to manage one while studying for A-levels? I’d also love any advice on how to balance both.
Hi Adrian,
Great to hear you have a strong interest in investment banking. I would say it is always good to get experience (at any level) if you can. At this stage, and with balancing studying, I would recommend looking at short term things - such as insight days, or week-long experience opportunities. This will also help you understand what the workplace is like, and will be helpful to guide you for university decisions maybe. If you google companies and their opportunities, or even check out their social medias, they often do events of all kinds to engage young people. Some websites which will help are Bright Network, and Rate My Placement. Also remember there is no harm in emailing HR teams to enquire what they are doing for you to gain experience in their company. It will also be a great opportunity to network, make connections, and ask lots of questions.
Good luck, and let me know if you have any more questions!

Hi Grace,

Thank you for your helpful response! I truly appreciate your advice.

I have a couple of follow-up questions:

1. Are there any particular companies or industries that tend to offer more accessible short-term experiences for students?

2. What's the best way to approach HR teams when inquiring about opportunities for students at my level? Should I send a general inquiry or ask specific questions?"

Thanks again for your guidance!

Best,
Adrian
Hi Adrian,

No worries, i'm glad it was helpful.

Try, Deloitte, Simmons and Simmons, and Goldman Sachs, some of my friends have had experiences with them, and seemed to go well. Some of them might also have like ambassador type programmes, which might necessarily give you investment banking work, but gets your foot in the door, get your name out there, and looks good on CVs.

And in terms of reaching out - be open, enthusiastic, and you. Yes, I would say if you know what you want (e.g investment banking experience/shadowing/etc) that's the best to go in with, as if you kind of tell them how best they can help you, people are mostly very friendly and willing to help. But also if you are open, maybe end the email with saying something like "or if you have any experience I could gain elsewhere in your company I would greatly appreciate it". Also if you know any people who might know people, don't be scared to ask, people love enthusiasm and love to help!

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
