York is lovely, and York SJ is a great uni!
If that is the only uni that accepts your qualifications, then just go there. It will only be a for a short time.

Hi there! I'm Kiera, I'm a student ambassador at York St. John. I've just started my third year in psychology here, so hopefully I can give you some insight!

I personally do love living in York! I'm from Lincolnshire originally, but after I graduate I'm hoping to stay nearby to York. Some of my favourite things about the city are:

The city is really safe in my experience, and has quite a community feel. It's a small city compared to nearby cities like Leeds - you can walk from one end to the other in around 30 mins. It feels a little less overwhelming for me, and you get to know the area well.

The food!! There are lots of small independent cafes, restaurants, food markets, and more. A lot of places will offer student discount if you ask🤗 We have "York restaurant week" a few times a year, where popular venues will offer deals (e.g., £5 for a coffee and brownie at the Savvy Baker).

The activities. There's lots to do - we have Moxxy (a games room) which is new and quite popular, a cat café, indoor axe throwing, and lots more. There's also all of the "touristy" activities - like walking the walls, exploring the shambles, the Ouse cruise, the Halloween corn maze, the food markets and Christmas market, or visiting the eye of York when it's around (to name a few).

Two of my favourite things about the University (not course specific) are:

The size! YSJ is really small, we have around 9,000 students at our York campus. Everyone has a preference - mine personally is a small university. Class sizes are quite small so you will get to know your lecturers and classmates really well, making it so much easier to get support and network.

The support services - YSJ has an incredible amount of support. We have a self-refer 1-1 support scheme with mental health/wellbeing practitioners, disability practitioners, dedicated international student support, funding support and advice, welfare support, accommodation support, student support networks, and so much more!! All of my lecturers have always been so incredibly supportive and accommodating. We also have lifelong career support - even 30 years after you graduate you can still access support.

There are lots of other positives - I'm just conscious of writing a bit of an essay here. If you want to talk about anything more specific or course-specific - message this account and we can have a chat!

Regarding the nightlife, there are as many pubs/clubs/bars in York as there are days in the year. I've not had any issues with the nightlife side of things - there's all sorts of different styled bars to fit every music taste. There's lots of smaller places (Dusk is a favourite) that do student cocktail deals. If you want a "big city" night out - Leeds is about 40 mins away on the train and is £2-£3 per way with a railcard. To summarise - there are lots of options!

I really do believe university is what you make of it - and you'll get out what you put in. It may be worth coming along to an open day if you are able! This way you can see the campus, meet current students and support staff, and this might help you feel more confident in your decision. I hope this helped, and again, if there's anything specific you want to know you can reply here to ask, or message this account🤗
