Hills Road Sixth Form Cambridge Debate

Hey, I'm wanting to go to Hills Road to study for my A-levels. Are there any students/ex-students who went to Hills who know about their debate options. Do they have a Debate team, A competitive team, Do they go to competitions, are the teachers open to bringing a debate team to Hills?
Thanks so much!

Hello,
I don't know much but as there are no other responses I hope I can help a bit!
From what I know, Hills has a debate society. They would usually run weekly debates on different topics during lunchtime. I don't know a whole lot since this is what I heard from a friend who was part of the society. I would assume that it is still running (I left hills this year). In regards to whether there is one at a competitive level, I have no clue.
I think that there are a few debate or essay competition opportunities that are usually posted by the school which you could try sign up for, once your there. It would depend on the subjects you plan to do, but there was a couple of debates run by the biology society and psychology society whilst I was at Hills - I am not too sure whether any other subjects had one...
Hope this helps

hi, idk if this is still relevant to you but as a current hills student i thought id try and help. there is a debate society, although it doesn't do anything competitive (to my knowledge) and is more to improve upon general debate/presentation skills. within biology, psychology and sociology societies (and probably others that i dont know about) there are occasionally debate sessions although they arent as frequent and obviously more catered to those specific subjects, for example one from sociology society recently was 'Should we actively try to diversify when recruiting people?'. i dont think you have to be taking these subjects to join these specific societies either if this is something you are interested in. hope this helped!!

yes there is definitely a model un in hills, i think it is seperate to debate soc and is its own society but it was very popular! there were signs for it everywhere and a few of my friends took part in it, definitely worth checking out. most of the societies in hills have instagram accounts, the debate soc one is @/hr.debate.soc just to give you an idea of what kinda thing they do, model un also has an account but its not active so probs not much help haha )

i spoke to one of my friends who took part last year and this year (we are in y13) and he said that it depends on the year and how competent and active the leaders are (most hr societies are run by students with minimal teacher input) and when he took part last year they travelled to debate other schools but this year the discussions led nowhere and any plans to do so fell through, likely to do with the leaders being too busy. it fully depends on the year but if someone took the lead to really want to debate other schools then they could organise that! hills also has grants that societies can apply for to cover transport costs etc. lmk if u have more questions!
