Black History Month 2024 at the University of Reading

Hi everyone!

As you may know, October is Black History Month.

What is Black History Month?

Black History Month (BHM) happens annually in October, and exists with the aim to "share, celebrate and understand the impact of black heritage and culture" (BBC, 2023).

The theme for BHM 2024 is 'Reclaiming Narratives', which aims to showcase the untold stories and history of Black individuals in the UK and beyond.

How is the University of Reading celebrating BHM 2024?

The University of Reading has an ongoing commitment to racial equality for staff and students. As part of this, we've got a packed agenda of events for BHM 2024! From creating artwork to talks, and community events to club nights, you can find the full events calendar here.

Our student ambassadors will be adding to this thread throughout the week with more information about our BHM activities. If you've got any questions about this or diversity and inclusion at the University of Reading, please pop them below!

Hello!

I am a second-year BSc Ecology and Wildlife Conservation student at the University of Reading, interested in educational outreach.

The University of Reading is a very diverse campus and aims to welcome everyone.

Some key events which are occurring throughout campus in the next month include:

Run by the University academics:

The black history arts showcase highlights the celebration of Black creativity through poems, art and song. Free tickets are available here.

Historicising Black Musical Cultures Across Borders is a discussion to explore the transnational flows of Black British music over the last century. (This is my personal favourite)

A lecture about Diversity in the Roman World, where Dr. Sam Agbamu will challenge common misconceptions about the ancient world and its influence on white supremacist narratives.

A free exhibition showcasing artwork created by Black and BAME participants.

Hosted by the Student union:

Nigerian Independence Day blog.

A Black National Coming Out Day speech and poster art

UoR Community Fete: Celebrating Reading's Black Excellence. (Really good !!)

Hi everyone!

On my speech and language therapy course, we talk a lot about equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and how to be mindful of this in our everyday practice. An optional module has been introduced recently which centres around 'Culturally Sustaining and Decolonisation Practices', which I am going to be studying this year and believe will be really informative.

EDI is something the University of Reading really values and wants to keep at the forefront of what they do.

Some really interesting things to do with Black History Month to read up on which UoR are involved in:

Esther Oenga, a black researcher working in the community currently looking at the impact of the cost of living crisis in South East England.

The World Reimagined Globes, an art installation on campus exploring the impact of the transatlantic slave trade.

Reading Borough Council share some events which are being held in order to celebrate Black History Month.

I hope this has been helpful in giving some information about some of the initiatives Reading is involved in for this year's Black History Month. Any questions, just let me know.
