best uni for a doctorate in clinical psychology?

hi! Im a 2nd year student studying psychology bsc (hons). I was wondering what the best universities are for doing a doctorate in clinical psychology. I am doing a career development plan and need to choose my top 3 unis. I have put down kings and UCL so far. choosing between queen marys or imperial. What do you guys think..? it needs to be london universities too btw.

Doing a masters and then a PhD needs some thought. You should be specialising in your masters e.g. child psychology, organisational psychology etc. This will then lead you to specialise for your DClinPsy. You need to look closely at the professors and research centres in each uni to see if you are interested in the research routes they are offering.

hiya! i am interested in becoming a clinical psychologist - not the umbrella term; clinical psychology. based on the government and NHS website, I don't need to do a masters, just need to get a minimum of a 2:1 and minimum of 1 year experience in order to become a clinical psychologist. any advice for universities?

I don't believe QMUL or imperial do the DClinPsy (but I might be wrong). Royal Holloway does

There arent "best" universities for the Doctorate, the same as there arent best universities for medicine. What will matter is how well your experience and way of working fits with the ethos of the individual course (they are all different in terms of academic or practical or reflective focus). I would do some research and google the Alternative Handbook, which will help you understand the above points.

Just a side note also, unless you have a wealth of clinical psychology paid expertise before your undergrad (at least a few years) i would not worry about the Doctorate yet. The average age of starting it is late 20s, and most people have to spend 4 or 5 years post undergrad getting experience before being accepted.

Hi there,

Thanks for your message.

We recommend you contact our Admissions team directly here. Our team will be able to give you a clearer idea of the entry requirements and how to make an application. You may also find it helpful to speak to the Psychology department directly at a talk at one of our upcoming postgraduate events.

Hope this is helpful.

Best wishes,
Royal Holloway, University of London
