Part-time degree and possible funding for a second year having Dyslexia and Epilepsy

Hi,

Can you help? I have Dyslexia and also Epilepsy, which I take medication for, and it messes up my memory. I have already completed a degree in the past but was on a very low dose of medication, and this was extremely difficult having the underlying issues.

Now, I would like to try university again as a part-time student to hopefully gain future employment. My only concern is the length of the course and funding. I know it is possible to do this course over two years, but it will be an issue with funding as I believe I can only get enough funding to cover one year of the master's, and the problems would be even more challenging to do. I think the only way to fund the course would be to try to gain part-time employment. Still, I know it would be very difficult as I already know because I've already been trying in the past to gain part-time employment And also, if I do find employment, would this be too much to do, bearing in mind the learning issue?

My question is: Is there any funding for grants/scholarships or extra funding from Student Finance that I am unaware of for students with disabilities to do the second year of a part-time degree?

Hi there,

What degree do you already hold?

Is it a Masters course you're trying to get funding for?

Thanks,
Ross

Hi,

I hold a BA (Hons) degree in Supply Chain Management.

Sorry, yes it is a Masters course.

Thank you.

Have you received any masters funding previously?

Thanks,

No
Hi Nmoraleee,

If your highest level of qualification is an undergraduate level, then you would be eligible for support for a masters course if you meet all of the other eligibility criteria. I have provided a link with further information on the Postgraduate Loan.

Thanks, Clare

Hi,

Thank you for the information.

I am aware that I can receive funding already for the course. One of my concerns is whether the funding I will receive will cover more than one year of the Master's course, and I believe I would need to do it over two years.

Is there any funding for grants/scholarships or extra funding from Student Finance that I am unaware of for students with disabilities who need to do the second year of a part-time degree?

Thank you

Hi,

The funding for Masters would cover the duration of the course. If it's a 2 year course then you'd get payments over 2 years.

We do have Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) funding as well.

Thanks,

Am I correct in believing that I would receive £12,471 for the duration of the course over two years, and this would cover the cost of tuition and also the cost of maintenance?

"The loan is paid directly to you. You can use it for your course fees and living costs.
If your course lasts for more than a year, the loan will be divided equally across each year of your course."

My course tuition fees over two years would be £6,750. So would that mean the amount I would get to live on over the two years would be £5,721.00? or £2,860.50 per year?

Thank you
Hi Nmoraleee,

Yes, this is correct. The Postgraduate Loan is £12,471 and will be paid over the duration of your course.

Thanks,
Calum
