Art Foundation

Hi there,

Just wanted to know, if I want to do an art foundation year at uni and then go on to do architecture, does my personal statement need to be regarding art foundation or architecture?

Secondly, after completing my foundation year, if I decide I don't want to do architecture and want to do graphic design or other art based subjects do I have to re-apply or how does the process work?

Hi @ChrisleeQuadros

I am assuming you are writing your personal statement to apply for the foundation year?

If so then I think it should focus on why you want to study the foundation course as that is what you are applying for. I would of course mention your interest in architecture and graphic design. A big reason why many people study foundation is to help them decide what direction they want to go in, so you can mention how from the foundation course you are hoping it will help you make this decision and find your strengths. Mention that you hope the foundation will help you progress to study one of those subjects.

If you apply for just the year long foundation course it doesn't matter if you change your mind on what you want to study afterwards, realistically you could even go on to study something completely unrelated to art. However if you apply to an undergraduate course like architecture with a foundation year built in then you may need to discuss this with the university.

I hope this helps and makes sense, if you have any questions feel free to ask

i’m applying for UAL art foundation but i’m planning to apply for the unspecialised course first so u get a month or two or try different courses before picking a pathway. otherwise u can specialise from the start but probably write a personal statement away from architecture but specifically for the foundation course in ur case xx

Hi @ChrisleeQuadros, thanks for you message.
Are you wanting to study the 4 year degree programme with us (The 1st year is the foundation year)? If so then you can focus your PS on your Architecture. If you are wanting to study a separate foundation year and then apply for an Architecture course then you can still focus your PS on your chosen degree choice.

Secondly, yes there is movement and change of subjects allowed once you complete the foundation year with us.

Let me know if I have answered you query or if you have anything else you would like to ask.

Thanks,
