I’m applying at the moment for unis but want to start in 2026 do I just out that on the dates for the uni option bits and then in my personal statement about a gap year. I’d like a place to know that’s what I’m doing at the end of gap year!

Hey there,
It’s great that you’re planning ahead and thinking about how to apply for 2026 entry while taking a gap year!
To answer your question, yes, you can select a 'deferred' start date for 2026 when you fill out your UCAS application. However, it's really important to contact the universities you're applying to before submitting your application. Each university may have slightly different policies on deferrals, and UCAS officially advises that you confirm with them that they’re happy to accept a deferred application for the course you're interested in. This way, you can ensure you're following the correct process.
In your personal statement, you can definitely mention your gap year plans, and how they’ll be relevant to your personal or academic growth. Universities will appreciate seeing that you're planning to make productive use of your time. However, it’s always a good idea to clarify with the universities how much detail they'd like in your statement regarding your deferral plans – this will ensure you tailor your application in the best way possible.
One thing to keep in mind is that you’ll be committed to the deferred place once accepted, and UCAS reminds you that you can only be released from it if the university agrees. So make sure you’re absolutely sure about the course and the Uni before locking it in for 2026.
Good luck with your applications – your forward-thinking approach will definitely pay off! Arslan – University of Salford Student Representative
