Transferring University

Hi so I'm a month into my linguistics course at the University of York and i've realised how much i dislike the course and the atmosphere of the university. I've decided I want to do english literature and have been looking into Sheffield Hallam. thoughts?? help???? is this a dumb idea? my supervisor said i could transfer to english lit next year at york but i'm really not sure i want to stay here... so annoying.
in my honest opinion i would stay at york ( i am a hallam student who did not get an offer from york unfortunately ) however it is all based on preference, if you don’t mind waiting an year definitely stay at york but if you want to start asap then move it’s not so bad here!

Hi @madzpionz ,

If you are unhappy with your course and you have tried it for a few weeks, I would always recommend looking into your options as you want to make sure you are happy with your uni and your course. Talk to the help team at your uni or if you have a personal tutor or academic advisor, talk to them about your options and you can see if you would be able to transfer! I would also recommend talking to someone at Hallam as they will be able to help you decide if the course is for you.

This is the email for one of the senior lecturers for English Literature at Hallam if you wanted to ask them any questions about the course as this might help you to decide if you like the sound of the course or not: [email protected]

This is also the page for English at SHU as this might give you some more information on the course if you haven't seen it already: https://www.shu.ac.uk/courses/english/ba-honours-english/full-time

As for Hallam in general, I really like it here and have had a great experience so far. I have fund the city to be fun and there's lots of things to do! There's lots of students here so there's always lots of people if you go on a night out or just go into town you always see lots of people which I really like.

I also have found the uni to be friendly and supportive. The tutors are always there for you if you need help, and you get assigned different tutors to help you out with different things. Whenever I have had a question, someone is always there to help which is nice too.

It's completely up to you what you end up doing and I would say make sure you find out all of the information before you make a choice as different places work for different people! If you can, try and visit Sheffield too so you can see what it is like as a city and if you like it.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy -SHU student ambassador 🙂

As someone who wanted to transfer but ended up sticking it out at York for 3 years, do it - the feeling of fomo doesn't go away even when you graduate. Even if you have to drop out and then start as a fresher at another uni in September you'll know exactly what you want and don't want from a uni and can do more research.

Thank you for sharing! I truly just feel so out of place here it’s such a weird feeling. Leaning towards leaving more than I am staying which is a shame but i’m hoping a different uni will be better suited for me

Hi,

This is totally normal thing to do, there are more people than you think that do this.

I would speak to the admissions department of the new University that you want to move to, as they will be able to best advise.

I hope this helps,

University of Sheffield also do Eng Lit (they also do Eng Lang & Linguistics). As someone who has done a BA at Uni of Sheffield, and am doing my MA at Hallam, I'd say Uni of Sheffield is much better for student support and has a much larger and more active SU.

They also have a better attitude to their students generally - at Hallam they still have a sign up in their main building directing you to a cash machine - which was removed a long time ago; and they will send you a map telling you where to get buses - on a road closed to public transport in 2020 during covid. That's Hallam for you.

Try University of Sheffield first - much better.

i really wanted to go to uos but they don’t accept my qualifications and i could only go to hallam. i personally really dislike hallam currently, the support is nonexistent and to consider you pay the same amount as for a better university feels like such a waste
