Recommendation for laptop

Hello I was thinking of doing computer science with foundation year in university of Salford or Manchester met and was wondering what r the specs for it? Would a Microsoft surface 7 be ok? Or should I get one that’s a Samsung galaxy
I have a Microsoft surface 5, and its pretty good, i like it. my 5 has a good battery life, can last at least 5 hours, and is alr at gaming.
edit i must say its pretty good for when i code in python+pygame for coursework for a level cs

The Surface laptops are great generally, but the newest Surface Laptop 7 should honestly be avoided for CS degrees because of Microsoft's decision to move over to using ARM processors. They're fantastic chips and definitely the future of computing, but for a degree now, you are far better off getting a laptop using an x86 processor from Intel or AMD to avoid having to emulate any of the myriad software you'll be using, especially when it comes to any app development you'll end up doing.

What's your budget?

Hey!

I would recommend a Windows laptop rather than a MacBook as it will give you more flexibility in terms of software and will integrate better with the Microsoft Office 365 systems that we use at Manchester Met. Although some students do use a MacBook, there are sometimes complications with some pieces of software.

In terms of a specific brand, there is no particular recommendation. However, we would recommend a machine with at least an Intel i5 processor and at least 8gb RAM (16 would be better and would mean the machine would last longer). You will get some Office 365 cloud storage space via Onedrive so a machine with an SSD drive would run faster than a HDD drive which might be preferable.

Hope this helps!
Chloe😀
