Computer science BSC

I am a student studying maths, English lit and psychology (Russian privately) and I wanted to know of I still can pursue comp sci at uni. I am currently doing a cs course online with KCL and plan on doing Edx courses as well as possibly work experience for tech.

Let me know if I still can do cs at uni and if possible a list of unis(preferably good ones) where I can study cs.

Thanks!!!!

Hey there Valkyrie,

I may sound completely biased in saying this but here at Bath we offer a CS course and a CS and Maths course, both of which have placement options so you can work in industry and get yourself some experience and money for a year. Our typical grade reqs are A*A*A including an A in maths. Imperial also do a highly ranked course, as do Warwick, St Andrews and Birmingham. And of course Oxford and Cambridge!

Studying CS at A level is often not a requirement to do CS at uni and some people will not have studies it before. Although having some initial familiarity may be an advantage, your KCL course in CS will also give you this familiarity - be sure to talk about it in your personal statement!

The Complete University Guide is a good resource to see the CS subject league tables. I wouldn't take it as your only source of info, but its good to allow you to explore some unis in more detail. I'd definitely recommend when you've shortlisted a few courses with content/modules you like the look of, to visit those unis and talk to the academics, current students and get a feel for the place.

I would advise though to go definitely for 1 or 2 aspirational choices such as Bath, Imperial, Cambridge (or whichever you are thinking of!), but be sure to have 1-2 with reqs pitched at the same level as your predicted grades, and also have an insurance choice whose requirements are at or a tad lower than you're predicted but that you'd be happy to go to - this is to give you a safety net just in case things don't go to plan on results day.

Very best of luck in your decision!

Hi there, I know a few people applying for CS this year and most of them do not do CS at A-level. In fact, the Head of our Computing department said that most universities prefer students not doing an A-level for Computer Science as they prefer teaching smaller details themselves. I know Math is really important for CS, which you have, so depending on the university requirements, I think you should fine!
