University course

I hate my university course. I’ve been here for a month and a half but have no motivation to do my course and can’t see myself doing it as a job in the future. I want to drop out but i’m worried because i’m scared about having no idea what I do when I leave but also, the money side of dropping out as I don’t know how I will get someone to take over my room and also cannot afford it with student finance. Any advice is greatly appreciated

Hi there,

It might be worth reaching out to your academic tutor to talk about switching university course, to see if this is an option. It will depend on your university's policies around course changes in the semester, as they may not allow this, and if you meet the entry requirements for any course you'd like to swap to. Either way, it is worth trying!

Hope this helps🤗

Is there another course you would be interested in at the same uni? Is so, follow the advice in the previous post. Your other options are to leave and look for a job or apply to another uni for a different course for 2025 entry.

If you withdraw now, you will be liable for 25% of the annual tuition fee for this term, which will be paid by student finance. You will pay this back under the standard repayment terms of the loan. If you have a maintenance loan, you will be required to pay back the portion that was intended to cover the rest of the term when you withdraw. Look closely at the cancellation terms for your accommodation. If you leave, are you responsible for the whole year if you can't get a replacement tennant or can you leave after giving notice and paying a penalty?

You would still be able to apply to SFE to fund for a new course if this is your first year of study, but you will have used up your gift year. This means that if you had to retake a year, you would need to fund it yourself.

Hi there 👋,

It sounds like you are going through quite a stressful time! I hope you are okay.

I would suggest that you speak to your well-being or support services at your university. I know this can be a scary situation to be in, and maybe talking to someone who knows at your university can guide you to the correct services.

I would also suggest, that you maybe speak to your university personal tutor (if you feel comfortable) and discuss your thoughts with them.

It may also be a case that the course itself isn't what you expected and a different one maybe more interesting to you now! Maybe have a look at other courses your university offer, there is nothing stopping you from seeing what else is out there! Don't think that because your current course isn't what you expected that you should stop university completely. Sometimes it takes trial and error with university life, to see what really suits you.

Hope this helps and good luck

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you are feeling this way about your course, it sounds like you have been having a difficult time.

I also would reiterate what has been said by the others on this thread- talking to your personal tutor at uni about this is a really good idea. They can help you with issues that you are having with your course and can see if there is any help or support that they can give you with this. They might be able to talk through how you are feeling and if it is one specific thing that is bothering you about the course, they may be able to help sort this out with you or come up with a plan for your assignments/the course in general.

If you like the uni but just don't like the course or are unsure if you would want a career in that area, you could always look into transferring courses if this sounds like a better idea for you. Have a look if there are any other courses you would like and if so, maybe try and speak to the course leader for that course as they can often help you and give you more information about the course. You could also speak to your tutor or university help team about this as they can give you some more information about if this would be possible.

Talking to your course leader at the moment might also be a good idea as they can explain what modules will be coming up and what kinds of things you will be learning over the next two and a half years that you have left of the course. This might either help you decide you definitely don't want to continue with the course, or there might be things coming up that you like the sound of and think you would prefer!

If you have decided you want to drop out, I would also talk to your uni help team about this in case they can help you with this process or give you some more information about the financial side of this. It's also worth advertising your room as someone may want to take it over which would help you out a lot financially.

I hope some of this helps,

Hey there 🤗

I’m really sorry to hear you’re feeling this way. It sounds like you’re going through a tough time, and I can understand how overwhelming it must be when you’re stuck in a course that doesn’t feel right. It’s completely okay to be unsure about what to do next.

If you’re thinking about dropping out, maybe it would help to first explore all your options before making a final decision. Could you talk to a personal tutor or a careers advisor at your uni? They might help you figure out a different path and if switching courses or taking a break is possible, rather than dropping out completely. Sometimes, there are ways to adjust things that can relieve the pressure without starting from scratch.

As for the financial and accommodation side, I know that can be super stressful. You could try speaking to the housing office to see what options are available if you do decide to leave. They may be able to help with finding someone to take over your room.

Whatever you decide, remember that it’s okay to change direction. It’s better to take a step back and find what truly feels right for you than to stick with something that’s making you unhappy. Don’t feel like you’re alone in this. You’re doing the right thing by reaching out for advice, and there’s always support to help guide you through it.

I hope it was helpful 💪 Feel free to reach out if you have any questions 😉 You can also chat with me or other students directly through The Ambassador Platform.

Take care,

Talk to your tutor before you do anything rash, but yeah uni isn't for everyone.

Young people are told that uni is the ticket to a comfortable life, but look at graduate prospects - it just isn't true. If you decide uni isn't for you, that's OK, but think hard before you do anything. You might just be experiencing culture shock.

Also, if you're in halls, a condition of your contract might be being a student. Dropping out would therefore mean the contract terms are broken, no more rent for you. Read the contract if you haven't already.
