A career in law, as either a solicitor or a barrister, is a career where you are primarily selling your intelligence - more importantly, clients are buying your intelligence - or think they are. Therefore, going to the university with the best reputation you can is a significant consideration.

And ignore the fact that employers say they recruit 'blind', because clients don't hire 'blind' - check out the online CVs and see how many mention Oxbridge! If your aspirations are regional, then that's fine, stay regional, but don't get sucked into the 'your uni doesn't matter' if your career will be based on selling the quality of your brain.

Heya!
The University of Sheffield provides a high standard education and student life. The University of Sheffield is a Russell Group University and our Student Union has been voted best in the country for the past 7 years. Here's a link to the law course if you'd like some more info! Trudie

Potential A*AA choices -
LLB Law (2025 entry) | The University of Manchester
Undergraduate study - Law - University of Warwick
Undergraduate Study at Birmingham Law School (AAA)
Outside the Midlands - but worth the journey -
Law | Study at Bristol | University of Bristol
Bachelor of Laws (LLB) | UCL Faculty of Laws - UCL University College London

Be aware that not all LLB courses are identical - go to Open Days, listen to subject presentations, look around and ask questions, then make the choices that are right for you.

In decades of legal practice, I have seen no evidence that clients select lawyers on the basis of which university they went to. The reason for going to a well regarded university is quality of education and overall experience.

Warwick and Birmingham are good universities.

Hi there,

I am a Cardiff uni student, my boyfriend and friends all did law here at Cardiff, and they are now doing masters so thats saying something! There is a good range of option modules where you can choose to specialise a bit more or is a good opportunity to test out different fields of law and see what you like. Also there are careers fair and networking events for you to get involved with, especially working in law. They offer extra-curricular pro-bono work for law students to get involved with which is great experience and good for CV and networking too.
Cardiff uni is a really good (in my maybe bias opinion haha), they have good rankings, students union and more. I am also from the midlands, and its the perfect distance to and from home for me.

Hope this helps,
Grace - Cardiff Rep

Hi there,

With those strong GCSEs and an A* already under your belt, you’re in a good position for some solid uni choices. Staying in the Midlands means you have great local options like Birmingham, Leicester, or Nottingham, which each have reputable programmes and are close to home. However, if you’re open to expanding the search for an exceptional course, UEA could be a great choice.

With UEA ranked in the top 20 for Law in the UK, this programme gives you a strong foundation and loads of options to explore specific areas of law you’re curious about. You’ll cover core subjects, but there’s flexibility to choose modules tailored to your interests. Plus, UEA’s Law School offers an impressive employability programme with opportunities to engage in competitions like mooting and mediation. The UEA Law Clinic also provides practical experience, boosting your skills in a real-world setting. For building a legal career, it’s an excellent choice!

Best of luck in your decision! Let me know if you've got any questions.
Daniel
