Further Maths at A level

Do you have to study maths at A level to be able to study further maths? So for example my son wants to study physics, chemistry further maths so would it be maths then further maths as a 4th A level?

Thanks

It would probably be silly to take further maths without taking maths. Most courses will ask for either just maths or both, and taking further maths without maths would probably be extremely difficult. Your son's school probably also requires alevel maths to be taken in order to take further maths.

None of the sixth forms or colleges around us state whether maths needs to be taken, hence the question. You’d think it would be in the entry requirements for further maths to take maths but it’s not. I have googled high and low and can’t get a definitive answer. Thanks for your reply

Could be worth emailing them and asking just to make sure.

You have to take Maths to do Further Maths unless you completed Maths earlier as a private candidate because FM has a lot content which can’t be learned without A level Maths syllabus

I would recommend studying with the Pearson Edexcel examboard. Because there are so many websites and YouTube videos dedicated to the specifications for both A-Level Maths and A-Level Further Maths. 🙂

Take a look at the content of A-Level Maths and A-Level Further Maths:

In theory, yes, you could study just Further Maths without single maths. But most Further Maths concepts are built on a strong understanding of single maths concepts, so you would end up having to learn most of the single maths syllabus anyway. It would, therefore, be a bit of a waste of effort to not take single maths if you are going to end up learning most of its content.

I can't see anyone getting a good grade in further maths without a good understanding of A level maths. Further maths builds upon maths topics so you'd be trying to understand more complex things without knowing the basics

Most sixth forms or colleges have it compulsory that you should only be doing further maths if you study A-level maths. If not, ideally you should still be only studying further maths while taking maths as doing further maths lone will be really challenging.
