A Levels for Architecture 2025

The following table lists the A level subject requirements for RIBA-validated architecture courses in the UK (as of October 2024). Please note that entry requirements can and do change so check university websites before you apply. Also check websites for details of other qualifications that are accepted, such as Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers, IB, Btecs, etc., and for GCSE requirements.

In the table, if the 'A level subject requirements' column is blank, no specific subjects are required. Courses are grouped according to entry grades/UCAS points.

In addition to A level (or other) qualifications, most courses will require you to submit a portfolio of your creative work as part of the application process.

Those courses marked with an * have not yet been fully validated by RIBA. New courses apply for ‘candidate status’ from RIBA and can become fully validated after the first cohort graduates.

Very helpful 🙂 Do you know if there are similar threads for other subjects?

I'm not aware of similar threads for other subjects. I put this together to help dispel the 'maths/physics are required for architecture' myth, which I see every year on TSR when students are choosing A-level subjects. It also highlights the RIBA-validated courses as some unis offer architecture courses that are not validated or (currently) seeking validation, which would make a student's journey to become an architect more complicated.

Ok, thanks. Stuff like this is really useful for people 🙂 As im sure you’re aware there are similar problems for medicine courses and others which i frequently see so clear lists really help people. Hope the myth gets dispelled on here cos its really not helpful for misinformation to spread especially when its info which could inform an important decision like picking a levels.
