Lancaster University

Hi. So, I'm in year 13 and hoping to do the social work course at Lancaster University. I haven't been there in person but from the virtual tour and the website, I fell in love with the uni. The problem is, I'm 4 hours away from Lancaster and for my teenage years, I've never been given any independence because of my dad due to how strict he is. I don't want to depend on him anymore because it is extremely frustrating. Should I take that step and move 4 hours away or stay somewhere closer to my home? I also need to ask if the university does any part-time jobs.

If you go to Lancaster, please reply!! Thank you.

I know several people at Lancaster currently, there are definitely plenty of opportunities for part-time work!

Hi @ilovejeongin143

I also moved several hours away from home and I've really enjoyed the independence and experience! There is also so much support to help you settle in if you need advice, just reach out to our wellbeing teams or college advice teams! There are also many part time jobs at the uni itself or in town in shops/restaurants/cafes. I'd definitely recommend applying to become a student ambassador, I've made so many friends through this job and I find the job fun!

Hope this helps,

Hi @ilovejeongin143

It’s a personal decision about whether or not you’d like to move to Lancaster but sounds like you’ve done a lot of research already online.

As mentioned by another ambassador there should be opportunities for part time jobs in Lancaster town and on campus. I’ve known students to have jobs in shops like Asda and Primark and also restaurants in town. On campus there are opportunities to be student ambassadors, bartenders and to work in the student union shop to name a few.

Hope that helps!

Hi,

I just have a few things to add to what other ambassadors have said (and some useful links for you)!

Firstly, it sounds like you have conducted your own research on the university virtually and that's amazing to hear! If possible for you to do so I would recommend visiting the campus and the city in person be that on an open day, an offer holder day or requesting a visit - getting a feel for it in person, even though you love it already, will help you see, or not see if the case may be (which is perfectly fine!), that moving away from home and both living and studying at Lancaster is for you! Looking at it online and stepping foot onto campus are massively different and actually seeing where you will be studying, where you could be living, meeting other prospective students and academics and just the general feel for Lancaster may be completely different to what you feel reading and researching virtually.

As mentioned, there is lots of support when you get here if you feel you are struggling or need extra support. Moving away from home and not depending or relying on parents can be challenging so please do reach out regardless of what university you may attend! Each college has their own advisory team College Advisor Teams | ASK - Lancaster University providing pastoral care and support and there are also wellbeing advisors Student Wellbeing Partnership Service | ASK - Lancaster University. As well as this there are counsellors and other support on offer, the only thing is you have to ask for it yourself, assuming you will be over 18 when you commence your studies.

Deciding whether to stay closer to home or travel further away is a big decision for you to make. I would recommend you speak to your parents - I know you say your Dad is strict but I imagine he just wants what is best for you. Speaking with students on the course at all universities would also be beneficial - you may like the university but find that other universities offer courses or modules you prefer (again, this is perfectly fine too!) so looking at they may help you decide. Here is the link to chat with a student studying the social work degree: Link To Student. And although you say "staying closer to home", you may choose to live in that universities hall of residence so even though you choose to stay closer to home you may not live at home which is also something else to consider. But, at the end of the day if you feel studying social work at Lancaster is for you and you love the uni then this is most important - loving where you are studying and what you are studying means you're more likely to succeed and do well rather than studying somewhere and being unhappy!

In terms of part time work, here is the link to ERS Vacancy Search Results - Lancaster University’s Employment and Recruitment Service. Not all vacancies listed are for students or are part time but they do regularly add new ones and they usually advertise on campus roles, such as working in the outlets / college bars / coffee shops etc. , before the start of the academic year so do make sure you check it during the summer holidays and apply for as many as possible!

Hope this helps, Ella - Lancaster University Student Ambassador
