Is Sheffield Engineering good? How is it compared to Warwick/Bristol?

I was wondering about the Sheffield General Eng course. I love the flexibility of the course and being able to specialise into essentially any field in Y3, similar to Cambridge.

I was wondering how good it is in terms of teaching, ranks, and overall as a university. how does it compares to some of my other options (Warwick GenEng, and Bristol AeroEng).

And also, how expensive are the living costs in each university and the bursaries provided by them. I'm a contextual student aswell.

Thanks
I think Sheffield is generally fairly reputable for engineering. I'd probably consider them more known for it on the whole than Warwick. That said if your goal is not to go into engineering but to go into investment banking, Warwick is the better option.

Bristol is an extremely expensive city to live in; Warwick is kind of just a suburb of Coventry and I think most students live in Coventry or Leamington Spa, not sure what cost of living is like there. I imagine Sheffield somewhat intermediate as it's a university city and thus has more demand for rental properties etc, but it's still in the midlands which tends to be a little cheaper than the south.

Bursaries you can compare by just checking whats available on each uni website. I imagine realistically they're going to be similar +/- 500 a year or so for each. As memory serves the best bursary packages are at Oxbridge and everything else is a step below and largely similar for the top ~20 or so unis outside of Oxbridge (and LSE if accounting for their rent reduction on halls which is a lot if you get halls all through the degree - in this case a moot point as LSE doesn't offer engineering in any form anyway though).

Sheffield has been ranked no.1 in Mechanical, Civil and Aerospace Engineering in the National Student Survey for Russell Group with great student satisfaction. There are several student led projects that you can join as well to apply skills that you have learnt on your degree and apply to multi-disciplinary teams.

Sheffield has a lower cost of living than the average city so your money will last you longer here. Also as it is a city uni, the majority of places in the city centre will offer some form of student discount / deals for students. Here is a link for fees and funding and all the types of scholarships/bursaries/ additional funding you could be applicable for:

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions!

I wanred to ask 2 questions, I've seen you have alot of funding bursary opportunities avaliable but I just wanted a quick summary of how much I can get. It'd be for engineering, I'm free school meal with low family income, and first in generation to go university. from a low IMD area.

Additionally, if I was to apply to sheffield general engineering BEng, and I've decided what course I want to specialise too earlier than the third year, can I specialise earlier?

For example while doing the general engineering course I decided I want to do aero or chemical, can I specialise into those in the 2nd year rather than waiting till the third?

Thank you
Sheffield has in general an excellent reputation for engineering, it’s comparable/equivalent to Bristol/Warwick. They are always regularly sending lots of talented graduates (particularly off the aerospace streams from what I’ve seen) into great graduate roles or top PhDs programs.

I wouldn’t personally pay much attention to the student survey results, it’s a nice feather in the cap they will advertise but in a few years time these surveys will swing around, a lot of the results are driven by how much unis tell their students to do it. If you have bad results its probably worth exploring but good results don’t indicate a lot.
