Regretting uni choices?

I recently got an offer back from Manchester to do English and American studies and it sent me spiralling and now I’m regretting all of my choices😭😭 I’m terrified of making the wrong choice I’ve applied for English with a heat abroad at Bristol, English at York and English with American studies at Sussex and Oxford and now I feel like I haven’t researched enough about my choices, I keep hearing bad things about the accommodation and the unis themselves, and there rankings/ graduate prospectives but it’s not like there’s any other unis I wanna go to idk what to do😭😭

Hi @Evasowo

Thanks for sharing your dilemma. I doubt you will be the only student feeling like this right now, I certainly had moments like this back in 2020 when I applied (I am now in my final year). By the way, they sound like a fantastic range of choices. Did you say you might do a year abroad if you attend the University of Bristol?

I was going to say if you’re interested in this then it is worth doing. I wasn’t able to do a year or term abroad with my course, but I really enjoyed a summer placement at a Global Summer School in Canada. At the summer school, I completed a short course and now have a professional credit which will make it easier should I wish to study in Canada again in the future. International opportunities are a great way to experience life in another country and don’t look too shabby on your CV either.

About your university choices, have you been to visit any of them, for example at Open Days? If not then I can highly recommend attending some.

Open Days are a fantastic opportunity to:

Meet academic staff and find out more about your chosen course, such as support for parents.

Meet fellow students and get an insight into student life at that university and their experience of the course!

Speak to other departments such as student support.

Have a campus tour and view the course facilities

Explore local accommodation options to see whether you feel at home in them.

Some universities like us offer a travel bursary towards the cost of attending an open day as we appreciate that the pennies can start adding up if you attend several Open Days.

If after visiting the universities, you still are not convinced there is nothing to stop you from reconsidering your course choices, it’s a good idea to speak to any of the universities you’re uncertain about attending to see if they can answer any of your questions.

I hope that helps a little bit. Feel free to let me know if you have any further questions.

Lucy 😊

Go see the unis if you can . You can also talk to students through uni buddy or even LinkedIn. In terms of mcr, I’ll be honest there is probably better accommodation out there, but it’s a great place to live. So many things to do in the city ( shopping, food, nightlife) and you can even getaway to somewhere like the Lake District nearby.

Hi!

Applying for uni can be so stressful! I remember feeling very similar when I was applying, going back and forth over every decision. If there's anything you want to know about York to help ease your mind, let us know! I can help you get in touch with the department/current students, and I can also answer any questions about accommodation, student life etc.

Hazel 🙂
