Can I get student finance if I switch university and degree after completing year 2?

I am currently doing my second year of a three year degree and I want to switch to a different university and degree after completing my second year. The new degree includes a foundation year so it will be 4 years in total, there is also an optional placement year which would make it 5 years total. If I apply for either of these courses at this new universities will I get student finance funding for all years of the degree?

Hi there,

When are you looking to switch over? Is this during the 24/25 academic year or will it be prior to the start of 25/26? Thanks, Jason

Ideally during 24/25 academic year, but if not possible then 25:26 academic year

What courses is it you're looking to do? What university would it be at?

I’m currently doing biomedical science at Roehampton and I’m in my second year, and I’d like to do aerospace engineering with a foundation year at Surrey university

So that would be a 4 year duration and you've studied for 2 years already?

Yes, or a 5 year course if I decide to do the optional placement year

Thank you.

The way we work out funding is by this calculation.

Length of course + additional year - previous study = years of funding

For you it would be

4 + 1 - 2 = 3 years, this means you wouldn't have Tuition Fee funding for year 1 but would for the remainder. If it's a 5 year course then same rules apply that you wouldn't get funding for year 1 but would for the remaining 4.

You'd get a Maintenance Loan for the duration of the course regardless.

Thanks, Ross

So the first year I would have to pay myself and the rest of the years are funded by student finance. Would I have to pay the full amount for year 1 in one go or is it possible to pay in instalments?

Yeah, for first year you'd be blocked for the Tuition Fee.

You'd have to confirm with the university how they'd want you to pay the Fees with them.

Ok that’s fine, and then I’m guessing after year one I will be unblocked for tuition fee, but I’d still get maintenance loan for the whole duration of the course.
What does the process look like for me applying for the new course in terms of when should I apply and what should I do about my current course?

Hi there, it depends when you change the course. If it's prior to the start of the academic year you'd update this when applying and if it's after you've started the year then we'd need the university to send us a 'change of circumstance' on your behalf to update this. Thanks, Jason

I haven’t applied yet so should I apply for the 25/26 academic year for the new course I want to do and continue with the second year of my current degree?

If you're starting in September 2025 onwards then you can apply for it once the applications will go live around March.

You can continue with your second year of your current degree if you're happy to do so.

Ross

The deadline for 2025 application is 29th January so I should submit my application before then?

If the course starts in September 2025 then this is the 25/26 Academic Year. Our applications for that Academic Year go live in March 2025.

If you need to apply for the course prior to that through the uni then yes, you'd need to apply to ensure you can get onto the course.

Oh ok cool, also just one more thing, after my second year how do I make sure that I’m not enrolled into that course anymore and I’m on the new course at the new uni

Inform the university that you're not continuing with them, they would then notify us of this change.

Would it make a difference if I dropped out instead of continuing second year?
Hi hzafar2005,

No, this would not make a difference as we would still count this as a year of study.

Thanks,
Calum
