Could I apply to Cambridge?

Hi! I’m currently in y12 and am thinking of maybe applying to philosophy or english at Cambridge next year. My current A levels are Maths, Eng lit and Art and design.

While my first two subjects are generally recommended, I’m worried that by taking art I’ve suddenly closed off my option of applying to Cambridge as my application may seem less ‘competitive’ compared to others! Does anyone know if this choice affects anything, or perhaps was in my position a couple years ago?? Thanks!

I can't see any reason you wouldn't be able to. You're taking two traditionally academic subjects which is what they recommend.

You will need to figure out what course you want to apply to though, as those are quite different subjects! Remember a degree in English Lit is a degree in literary analysis/criticism, not in just generally reading  If you really like picking apart the syntax of individual sentences and leveraging critical/literary theories to develop analyses it's potentially a good option, but be aware that is the nature of the course (and some people enjoy reading literature but not so much analysing it!).

Also if you are interested in literary analysis then depending on what your specific interests are, you may also want to explore other literary courses at Cambridge e.g. if you are mainly interested in medieval literature it's worth seriously considering ASNAC, if you're mainly interested in classical literature consider classics etc  (bear in mind the latter two involve a fair bit of language work though!).

Thank you so much!! Since my post, and after more rigorous research I think English Lit may be the one for me just generally as a course😁

But thank you really for your reassurance, after my GCSE results my family has been suggesting Oxbridge as an option and have been subtly pressuring me to switch art even after the subject change deadline😭 so it’s good to hear that my application could still be seriously considered despite me taking a less traditional subject like art!!

Hey, I’m applying for English at Cambridge this year and take English, History and Art. I don’t think taking Art is that limiting considering you do study a bit of art history in the course and it requires a **** ton of time management. However, if it does put you at a disadvantage due it being not traditionally academic, Cambridge differs from Oxford as it requires you submitting two pieces of written work and doing an admissions test so I think there is a predominant focus on how well you can write over other parts of your application. I mean, I’ll let you know if I’m successful and maybe that will help?? It’s always worth a shot!

Thank you so much! And the best of luck to you!! I’m glad to hear about the apparent focus on writing and analysis skills over your holistic a level combination, hopefully all goes well!😁
